You have probably run into quite a few loanwords<\/a> from English in Russian. Some of them are older<\/a> and almost sound native, e.g. \u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b<\/strong> – soccer or \u043b\u0438\u0444\u0442<\/strong> – elevator. However, recently a new wave of loanwords related to the economy and technology has entered Russian. These words are still largely perceived as foreign, and they pose a challenge to learners of Russian, too. You see, a lot of them don’t mean what they sound like. I have put together a list of words you are likely to hear in a modern office setting that you shouldn’t rely on your knowledge of English to figure out. All examples come from the Russian National Corpus<\/a>; all translations are mine.<\/p>\n

1. \u041e\u0444\u0438\u0441<\/h3>\n

The trouble starts with the word “\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u0441<\/strong>.” It certainly looks like it should mean office, and it does, but in a very specific context. \u041e\u0444\u0438\u0441<\/strong> refers to the office, premises, headquarters, or seat of a modern style, for-profit company, likely in the financial, travel, insurance, banking, or other free-market sector. Unlike in English, you don’t normally refer to the room where someone works as an \u043e\u0444\u0438\u0441 — that is called \u043a\u0430\u0431\u0438\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You guessed it — \u0444\u0430\u0439\u043b<\/strong> does not match all the meanings of the English word “file.” It can certainly refer to a file on your computer, but, more surprisingly, it refers to plastic sheet protectors, which are very popular in Russia.<\/p>\n

\u0411\u0435\u0439\u0434\u0436<\/strong> is actually a name tag. It is sometimes affectionately shortened to \u0431\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0434\u0436\u0438\u043a<\/strong>. A police badge is called \u0436\u0435\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u041d\u043e\u0443\u0442\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> is a laptop computer, although you can hear some people say \u043b\u044d\u043f\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043f<\/strong>. A notebook is \u0437\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0441\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043a\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u0430<\/strong> or, if you are talking about a school notebook, \u0442\u0435\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u044c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. \u0411\u0438\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0441<\/h3>\n

\u0411\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0441<\/strong> only normally refers to a modern for-profit enterprise in the finance or sales sector — the kind that works out of an \u043e\u0444\u0438\u0441<\/strong>. It is not normally used to talk about pre-90s businesses, regardless of their nature. If you want to say that someone started a business and that business was, say, a tailor shop, you would probably say “\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0451 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

\u0414\u0438\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d<\/strong> refers to the graphic or interior design, so there needs to be a strong esthetic or usability component to it. If you are talking about the design of a new machine, there are several ways to express that. Depending on the context and the industry, it can be \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0447\u0451\u0442, \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0438\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435, and so on.<\/p>\n

\u0418<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u0434\u0436<\/strong>, on the contrary, is usually figurative. Rather than describe a visual image (\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong>), it talks about someone’s brand image or public persona. It can describe both people and entities.<\/p>\n

9. \u041f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0439\u0434\u0435\u0440<\/h3>\n

\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u0434\u0435\u0440<\/strong> is not any kind of provider but specifically your Internet service provider.<\/p>\n

10. \u041f\u0438\u0430\u0440<\/h3>\n

By this point, few will be surprised to hear that \u043f\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> is not really PR (public relations). Public relations, as in a department that issues statements for the press for an organization, is \u0441\u0432\u044f<\/span>\u0437\u0438 \u0441 \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044e<\/strong>. That is a neutral term. \u041f\u0438\u0430\u0440<\/strong> usually implies some sort of manipulation of public opinion, so it is really closer to a “PR campaign.” A funny usage of this term is \u0447\u0451\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0438\u0430\u0440<\/strong> — a smear campaign against political or business rivals.<\/p>\n
