You may be familiar with proper names being used generically for inanimate objects, such as aspirin. However, Russian often takes the name of a famous person to describe someone and to say they share some characteristic of that person. So what does it mean to be called a Pushkin?<\/p>\n

1. Multitasker<\/h3>\n

Julius Caesar<\/a> (\u042e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0439 \u0426\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u0440\u044c<\/strong>) was, of course, a Roman warrior, ruler, and writer and does not need a long introduction. What may be surprising, though, is that a \u0426\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0440\u044c in Russian is also someone who does many things at once. This is because Julius Caesar is famous for his multitasking<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Person Responsible (for Anything and Everything)<\/h3>\n

Alexander Pushkin<\/a> (\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u041f\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d<\/strong>) is arguably the most celebrated poet\/writer in Russia, credited with shaping the Russian language as we know it. However, his name is sometimes brought up as a response to someone saying they don’t know something or didn’t do something. It is an equivalent of “that guy” of sorts — “So who do you expect to do it, that guy?”<\/p>\n

Anton Makarenko (\u0410\u043d\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043d \u0421\u0435\u043c\u0451\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u041c\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043a\u043e<\/strong>) was a Soviet educator<\/a>, famous for establishing and running self-governing homes\/boarding schools for street children. Nowadays, his name is used to ironically refer to someone’s pedagogical or child-rearing experiments.<\/p>\n

Pavlik Morozov<\/a> (\u041f\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043b\u0438\u043a \u041c\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0432<\/strong>) was known in the USSR as a boy who was revenge-killed by his family for turning his father in to the authorities. The story has since been demonstrated to be largely untrue. However, to this day, any person suspected to be a “snitch” or considered to be too eager to report any wrong-doing can be humorously called Pavlik Morozov.<\/p>\n
