What else should one do when in Russia? Because a foreigner cannot \u2013 and should not! \u2013 spend every day of their visit in Russia hunched over their desk learning grammar or trying to read \u201cFathers and Sons\u201d in the original. This country has so much more to offer! It is filled with amazing experiences just waiting for you to experience them! Let\u2019s go out and explore! <em>(Once again, this list of top ten things to do in Russia is not based on any kind of statistics \u2013 quite the opposite, I\u2019m afraid \u2013 it was entirely made according to what I have done in Russia and liked and can thus recommend others to do.) <\/em>And note that all of the verbs <em>(well, almost all of them) <\/em>used in this post is perfect! Meaning roughly you only have to do each thing ONCE. You can buy Russian vodka in almost every country in the world, but what better place to enjoy but actually when you\u2019re in the country that makes it? Russians don\u2019t drink vodka <strong>\u00ab\u0431\u0435\u0437 \u0437\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [without <em>(pl.)<\/em> hors d&#8217;oeuvre, appetizer; snack, refreshment] and that\u2019s why when you\u2019re in here you should do as the Russians \u2013 and take a bite of a salted cucumber or some meat after downing a shot!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>2. \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0441\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0443 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0434 \u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [visit (pfv.) an Orthodox church and place (pfv.) a candle in front of an icon].<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There are Orthodox churches to be found also in other countries <em>(Greece is just one of many examples)<\/em>, but Russian Orthodox churches in Russia are something else entirely. There\u2019s a very special atmosphere in Russian Orthodox churches, there\u2019s a certain kind of stillness which creates a special feeling of being in a safe place. No matter what you\u2019re religion is, you\u2019re always welcome to enter an Orthodox church in Russia <em>(but remember to cover your head if your a woman!) <\/em>and there\u2019s always the possibility to purchase a candle for a ruble or two from one of the many kind <strong>\u00ab\u0446\u0435\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0443\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [clergymen] always present in the church. And there are plenty of icons to choose from when it comes to where you\u2019ll place your candle! Here is where you get to be truly creative. There are so many different kinds of museums in Russia that one doesn\u2019t even know where to begin! For the art lover the museum not to be missed when in Saint Petersburg is <strong>\u00ab\u042d\u0440\u043c\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [The Hermitage], and when in Moscow it should be consider a sin not to pop by <strong>\u00ab\u0420<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043c\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [The Russian Museum]. But Russia has museums dedicated to other things expect for paintings, like thousands of literary museums in almost every town dedicated to some famous Russian writer or other. And not to forget all of the amazing museums on the history of Russia! But my personal favorite is <strong>\u00ab\u043c\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0437\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0445 \u0432\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [the museum of forgotten things], which can be find in many Russian towns. There they put up on display all sorts of old things people now have forgotten how to use. Everybody does it, so then why shouldn\u2019t you too? To have something to bring home and show to friends and family, and keep for your eventual grandkids to enjoy one day? Wouldn\u2019t you like to say one day: \u201cHere\u2019s grandma in the great city of Petrozavodsk, and the man in cement behind her is Lenin\u201d. The grandkids will ask: \u201cWho is Lenin?\u201d And you\u2019ll have to explain: \u201cWell, once upon a time in 1917 some stuff went down in Russia\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>6. \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [climb <em>(pfv.)<\/em> military equipment].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This has yet to become as much of a <strong>\u00ab\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u043a\u0430 \u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [classic of the genre] as number 4 and 5, but I think that it could very well become more and more popular as time goes by. The important thing is to be sure you can get DOWN from the tank before you decide to climb UP on it. And maybe that\u2019s why it has yet not caught on fully with foreigners <em>(or even Russians for that matter) <\/em>\u2013 it is a bit tricky and in some cases even dangerous\u2026 Always bring a friend, and if possible, a strong man to give you hand! <em>(Unless you in this case are the strong man, then I\u2019m afraid you\u2019re out of luck).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>7. \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e \u0432 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [drink <em>(pfv.)<\/em> beer in a park]. It doesn\u2019t matter what the season is in Russia \u2013 summer with plus 40C or winter with minus 30C \u2013 it is always good enough weather to call up a friend, buy two bottles of beer and hit the closest park to sit down on a bench and start<strong> \u00ab\u0444\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[<em>(impfv.) <\/em>philosophize]. Or just to simply discuss the latest gossip at work, perhaps catch up on things going on in each other\u2019s life or why not have a detailed discussion on current political affairs. When with a beer and in a park in Russia everything <em>(and anything)<\/em> goes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>8. \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0431\u044b\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0434\u0438\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0435 \u0438 \u043f\u043e\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0446\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u043e\u0434 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0443 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [visit <em>(pfv.)<\/em> a Russian discotheque and dance <em>(pfv.)<\/em> to 80\u2019s music]. Russians dance in a very special way, something that cannot be explained with words <em>(not English words anyhow)<\/em>, but this you must see with your very own eyes. By the end of the night you are most likely to find yourself dancing in just the same way \u2013 but this doesn\u2019t necessarily have to be a bad thing. It could be great!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>9. \u00ab\u041a\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0441\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u0443 \u043f\u043e\u0434\u043e\u0437\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e, \u043d\u043e \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u0438<\/strong><strong> \u043d\u0430 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [buy <em>(pfv.)<\/em> Soviet badges from a shady, but kind old man at the market]. You can buy a tiny little Soviet <strong>\u00ab\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [badge, ensign; favor, badge of loyalty; ideograph, pictorial symbol which directly represents a concept or thing] with almost anything on it at a Russian market. They come with all sorts of things on them: Russian cities, famous Russians \u2013 from poets to politicians \u2013 different sports, different Soviet clubs and a million more things. If you have a hobby, you are most likely to find a Soviet badge dedicated to it. These badges look great when you put them on your coat or on you bag. <em>(Do I need to tell you how many badges with Dostoevsky I have?)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>10. \u00ab\u0421\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0447\u0442\u043e-\u043d\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0437\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [do <em>(pfv.)<\/em> something that is forbidden]. I\u2019m not asking you to go out and commit a crime while in Russia, but what I\u2019m suggesting you do is simply make the most of the fact that you\u2019re in Russia \u2013 a wild country where the long arm of the law is sometimes not long enough to reach you. Don\u2019t do anything stupid, though. I don\u2019t know what you had in mind, but I had in mind buying all the albums of <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0410<\/span>\u043b\u043b\u0430 \u041f\u0443\u0433\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Alla Pugachyova] in MP3-format on an illegal CD\u2026 But bought quite legally in a normal music store for about 100 rubles. Now that is the kind of forbidden stuff I think you should devote yourself to while in Russia \u2013 nothing else! Only buying cheap CDs\u2026 <em>(Not to mention movies!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I know there are still millions of other things one could and should do when in Russia.
