Not too long ago we had a post here on the blog called \u201cRussian Numbers 0 \u2013 100\u201d<\/a>. No matter how useful this post might have been (and still is as you\u2019ll see if you go back and read it again)<\/em>, <\/em>I think I\u2019m speaking for all of us when I say that it didn\u2019t answer all our possible questions about Russian numbers. \u00ab\u0410 \u043f\u043e\u0447\u0435\u043c\u0443<\/span>?\u00bb <\/strong>[And\/But why?] Because Russian grammar has a little thing called \u00ab\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [cases] \u2013 six of them, if I\u2019m not mistaken \u2013 and they affect everything else around them in Russian language: \u00ab\u0447\u0438\u0441\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u2013 \u043d\u0435 \u0438\u0441\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435!\u00bb <\/strong>[pl.<\/em> numbers are no exception!]. But because this is a rather big subject to cover completely in one post, I won\u2019t. Today I\u2019ll try to explain the main rules by using an excellent idea was sent to me by one of our readers – \u00ab\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u042d<\/span>\u0434\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0434\u0443!\u00bb<\/strong> [thanks to Edward!]. He sent me different sentences containing numbers from the main page of the Russian BBC<\/a> along with the obvious question: \u00ab\u041a\u0430\u043a \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c?\u00bb <\/strong>[How to pronounce?]. Let\u2019s see if we can clear up how to pronounce numbers in Russian in different cases today \u2013 or at least clear up a few points (not everything though, and I beg you to forgive me for this in advance, but as long as this blog is alive \u2013 that\u2019s as long as I\u2019ll be here to help you understand Russian\/Russia better! patience!)<\/em> in this regard.<\/p>\n

I think you all already know by now that there were \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0432\u0437\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [two explosions] \u00ab\u0432 \u043c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c \u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in the Moscow subway] \u00ab\u0432 \u043f\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [on Monday] \u00ab29 (\u0434\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e) \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[the 29th<\/sup> of March]. Being as the sentences using numbers below were also taken from BBC Russian\u2019s first page either yesterday (by Edward)<\/em> or today (by me)<\/em>, many of them are connected with this painful experience.<\/a> Just so you\u2019ll know this while you read them and not be surprised that some of them are rather sad.<\/p>\n

If something HAPPENS or HAPPENED on a certain date the case you should use is GENITIVE (both for the date and for the month)<\/em>. If it is just a \u2018normal day\u2019<\/em> (unlike Monday the 29th<\/sup> of March) then you use NOMINATIVE in NEUTER for the number like this: \u00ab\u0421\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f 1 (\u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0435) \u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [today is the 1st<\/sup> of April]. Note that the month is also in GENITIVE here!<\/p>\n

Genitive:<\/span> \u00ab…\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043e 40 (\u0441\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/span>) \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0440\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2026around\/approximately 40 were injured].<\/p>\n

Genitive:<\/span> \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0435 90 (\u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430) \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a…\u00bb<\/strong> [Perished over 90 people\u2026].<\/p>\n

NOTE! As you\u2019ve seen in the sentences above, the noun \u00ab\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [man, adult male person; human being, person] changes in a special way in genitive plural after numbers \u2013 if it doesn\u2019t turn into the plural form \u00ab\u043b\u044e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [people], that is, but that\u2019s a whole other conversation. At first it looks like all is grammatically well with this particular noun: \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [two persons] and \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u0438 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [three persons] and \u00ab\u0447\u0435\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0440\u0435 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [four persons]. But then comes the sudden blow: \u00ab\u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u00bb <\/strong>[five persons]! What happened? That\u2019s right \u2013 NOTHING happened! And nothing will also happen to this noun even if you\u2019ve got as many people as a hundred, look for yourself: \u00ab\u0441\u0442\u043e \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [a hundred persons].<\/p>\n

Genitive<\/span> + <\/span>accusative<\/span>:<\/span> \u00ab\u0441 1950-\u0445 (\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0430 \u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u044f\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f\u0442\u044b\u0445) \u043f\u043e 1980-\u0435 (\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0430 \u0434\u0435\u0432\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c\u0438\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0435) \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [from the 1950\u2019s to the 1980\u2019s].<\/p>\n

When it comes to how to pronounce years in Russian it is actually much easier said than done (pun intented!)<\/em>. Only the LAST number changes according to the case in question. Usually this case is the PREPOSITIONAL case and that\u2019s why you\u2019ll find the preposition \u00ab\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[in] before the year. That\u2019s for sentences with ONLY a year in them, like the three examples above. But if you\u2019ve got a date first, then the year has to be in GENITIVE \u2013 without any preposition!
