Today we\u2019re celebrating the <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>1)<\/em> resurrection; <em>2) fig.<\/em> revival] of Christ \u2013 He\u2019s called <strong>\u00ab\u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> in Russian \u2013 in the first connotation of this noun: resurrection. In general this noun can be difficult to keep apart from another noun which is pronounced exactly the same but spelled differently: <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Sunday]. Christ\u2019s resurrection \u2013 <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; as we can all see clearly, is spelled with the modern Russian orthographic ending for neuter nouns: <strong>\u00ab-\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong>. But the last day of the week <em>(in Russia)<\/em> is spelled with the <em>\u2018older\u2019 <\/em>orthographic ending for neuter nouns: <strong>\u00ab-\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong>, thus replacing the <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> with <strong>\u00ab\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [a soft sign]. But there\u2019s really not much of a difference in pronuncing these two different ways of spelling <em>(at least not when I\u2019m pronouncing them, but I could be wrong)<\/em>, so my best advice to you all is to simply either <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0437\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>pfv.<\/em> to try <em>pfv.<\/em> to remember], <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043e\u043b\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0438, \u043d\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u044f\u0441\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0438\u0435 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445\u00bb <\/strong>[or <em>impfv.<\/em> to continue <em>impfv.<\/em> making mistakes, <em>impfv.<\/em> hoping on the Russians\u2019 mercy].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">So what exactly was it that Jesus did today <strong>\u00ab\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0438 \u0434\u0432\u0435 \u043b\u0435\u0442 \u0442\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span> \u043d\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [some 2000 years ago]? In Russia today everyone says to each other: <strong>\u00ab\u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0435!\u00bb<\/strong> [Christ is risen!], and answer each other with: <strong>\u00ab\u0412\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u043d\u0443 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0435!\u00bb<\/strong> [In truth <em>(He)<\/em> is risen!]. But this verb is really spelled <em>(in modern Russian orthography, that is)<\/em> like this: <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u00bb<\/strong>. That\u2019s the male form in the past tense of the perfect verb <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [resurrect; revive; arise, rise]. As you can see, in the past tense for the male form this verb loses its ending completely. If Jesus had been a girl, then this verb would have looked liked <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[<em>lit. (she has)<\/em> risen] in the saying above. If Jesus would\u2019ve have been resurrected together with a close friend, or just someone He met accidentally while in Hell, then it would have been necessary to use the plural form which is <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>lit. (they have)<\/em> risen]. The perfect verb means that Jesus was resurrected only ONCE, and that He did receive a RESULT <em>(as is how we usually tell when the perfect aspect should be put to use in Russian grammar)<\/em>. Had Jesus not been resurrected once, but TWICE \u2013 I know, this is <strong>\u00ab\u0431\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [blasphemy], but since it is <strong>\u00ab\u0432 \u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044f\u0445 \u0433\u0440\u0430\u043c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [for grammar], I think <strong>\u00ab\u0411\u043e\u0433 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [God will forgive], don\u2019t you? \u2013 then we would\u2019ve have had to make use of this verb in its imperfect aspect: <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [to rise from the dead, come back to life; to regain one&#8217;s strength]. In the past tense this verb looks like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; [He rose from the dead two times].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d\u0430 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u0438 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; [She rose from the dead three times].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u0412\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0435 \u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0447\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0440\u0435 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0430 \u2013 \u0438\u0441\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0442\u0435 \u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u0438, \u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u043e \u043e\u0442\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; [Together they rose from the dead four times \u2013 excluding those times, when each of them rose from the dead on their own].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Okay, I might have crossed the line here. <strong>\u00ab\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f!\u00bb<\/strong> [I beg for forgiveness!] But how else to combine this kind of useful information on Russian grammar with such a cool verb as <em>pfv.<\/em> <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>, without mentioning also its <em>impfv.<\/em> <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>?
