That was \u2013 <strong>\u00ab\u043e <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0430\u0441!\u00bb<\/strong> [oh the horror!] \u2013 over two months ago now. That\u2019s why I think it is high time <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0436\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430\u0448 \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0433\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>pfv.<\/em> to continue our conversation] about everybody&#8217;s favorite instrumental case! <strong>\u00ab\u0410 \u043a\u0430\u043a?\u00bb<\/strong> [But how?] you ask. Maybe by having a look at yet another useful <em>\u2018verb couple\u2019<\/em> which contains <strong>\u00ab\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[two aspects] of one and the same verb: <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0432\u0438\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [perfect] and <strong>\u00ab\u043d\u0435\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0432\u0438\u0434\u00bb <\/strong>[imperfect]. And what better verb couple but <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0438 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>? Right away I can see you all raising your eyebrows in concern and with the obvious question: \u201cBut how can a <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0437\u0432\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [reflexive verb] like the imperfect aspect of <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> become a non-reflexive verb in the perfect aspect and transform into <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>?\u201d I have no answer to this question. I don\u2019t know! All I know is that it can and that it does. So all I can say is: <strong>\u00ab\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0443\u0447\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [One has to learn it]. The verb <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0438 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>has more than one meaning <em>(which Russian verb with a little bit of self-respect doesn\u2019t?!)<\/em>: <strong>1)<\/strong> to stand; <strong>2)<\/strong> <em>(with instrumental case)<\/em> to become, get. The meaning which is interesting to us today is the second one because it demands to be followed by THE INSTRUMENTAL CASE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Let\u2019s have a look at a couple of examples of how this happens in sentences. Have you often wondered how to know when to use perfect and when to use imperfect in different sentences? I know I have! But if you haven\u2019t then that\u2019s okay. For those of you who have: this can be illustrated \u2013 somewhat anyway \u2013 by the phrase <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [to become friends]:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041c\u044b \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [We didn\u2019t become friends <em>(because a RESULT \u2013 though it was negative \u2013 was achieved you must use the PERFECT aspect)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041c\u044b \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0433\u043e \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>lit.<\/em> We became friends a long while, but better yet: It took us a long time to become friends <em>(here the important thing is the PROCESS of becoming friends, not so much the result, thus apply the IMPERFECT aspect)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">And how about pairing the verb <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> with the noun <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [profession] and create the curious combination <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a\u0435\u043c-\u043d\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[to become somebody]?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u0423\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span> \u0432\u043e \u0432\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0431\u044b \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438 \u0441\u0442\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u044b \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044f\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0445\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c\u0438 \u0441\u043f\u0435\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Already during their studies our students become good specialists <em>(in this sentence the words \u2018our students\u2019 mean students at this particular institution of higher education IN GENERAL, that this is repeated over and over again or is constantly happening \u2013 so you need the IMPERFECT aspect)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044f \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043b \u0445\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u043c \u0441\u043f\u0435\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043c \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u043f\u044f\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043b\u0435\u0442 \u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u044b\u0442\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Petya became a good specialist only after five years of work experience <em>(you see in this sentence Petya has achieved a RESULT \u2013 even though a process of five years was needed first in order to attain it \u2013 so we get to use the PERFECT aspect this time. Yay for Petya!)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430 \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0430\u043b\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Masha dreamed of becoming a ballerina <em>(Masha, of course, wanted not the \u2018process\u2019 of becoming a ballerina, but to actually have the result in her hands (and in her feet obviously) one day \u2013 thus with this verb we place the PERFECT aspect!)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u041f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0438 \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044f\u0442\u0441\u044f, \u043f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0438 \u0440\u043e\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f!\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>lit.<\/em> \u2018they\u2019 don\u2019t become poets \u2013 \u2018they\u2019re\u2019 born poets!, but better to translate like this: \u2018You can\u2019t become a poet, you can only be born a poet\u2019 <em>(here is another GENERAL statement about reality demanding the IMPERFECT aspect)<\/em>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">I don\u2019t what the last sentence is about at all&#8230; I found it somewhere in the darker depths in my brain and decided to make use of it here today. For the sake of grammar! But if it is true? <strong>\u00ab\u0412\u0440\u044f\u0434 \u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Hardly; it is unlikely; I doubt it] because it seems to me that <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u043e\u0431\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435 \u043d\u0430 \u0431\u0440\u0435\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [generally it looks like delirium].
