Colors are one of the first things you learn in any language. However, as you talk to native speakers or read authentic literature, you will start noticing that they are they are more diverse than the basic colors of the rainbow you learned.<\/p>\n

The Basics<\/h2>\n

Colors of the rainbow go like this:<\/p>\n

A mnemonic device<\/a> to remember them in order is “\u041a\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a \u0436\u0435\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c, \u0433\u0434\u0435 \u0441\u0438\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442 \u0444\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043d<\/strong>” (Every hunter wants to know where the pheasant sits). The first letter of every word is the first letter of the corresponding color. You will notice that there are two words for “blue” — more on that below.<\/p>\n

Reds<\/h2>\n

The basic word for red is \u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>. However, it has numerous synonyms and shades. I will not attempt to give a comprehensive overview — here are a few frequently used descriptions. I will not be giving English translations because they often don’t line up with the Russian colors (e.g., crimson can be either \u043c\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439 or \u0431\u0430\u0433\u0440\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439, but these two are distinct shades in Russian).<\/p>\n

\u043c\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> – color of raspberries
\nComes from: \u043c\u0430\u043b\u0438\u043d\u0430
\nTypical collocations:

Blues<\/h2>\n

Russian is famous for distinguishing between two — often mutually exclusive — shades of blue<\/a> – \u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439<\/strong> for the darker shades and \u0433\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> for the lighter shades.<\/p>\n
