We have already talked about photography<\/a>, so I thought it may be nice to learn to talk about other\u00a0visual\u00a0arts. I am not a very skilled or advanced artist, so I will concentrate on the basics. Feel free to ask me or your fellow readers for anything I don’t mention in this post!<\/p>\n

Techniques<\/h2>\n

First, Russian does not lexically distinguish between drawing and painting. Both are known as \u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong>. If you would like to specify the exact kind, you need to give more information about the medium\/technique. The art itself is called \u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u043f\u0438\u0441\u044c<\/strong>. Please mind\u00a0that the school subject will most likely be called \u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> or \u0418\u0417\u041e<\/span> <\/strong>(\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>) as opposed to \u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> (literally, “art”). Classes about art history and appreciation will, however, have the word \u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> in their names.<\/p>\n

Specific techniques include<\/p>\n

\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u043c<\/strong> – to paint (with oil paint)<\/p>\n

\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043a\u0430\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0430\u0448\u043e<\/span>\u043c<\/strong> – to sketch\/draw (with a pencil)<\/p>\n

As you noticed, the material\/medium is in the instrumental case. I will be listing more media below.<\/p>\n

\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0437\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0438<\/strong> – to sketch<\/p>\n

Materials<\/h2>\n

To make a drawing or painting you will need some of the following:<\/p>\n

\u043c\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0442<\/strong> – easel<\/p>\n

\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong> – paint brushes<\/p>\n

\u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/strong> – paint<\/p>\n

\u0433\u0443\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u044c, \u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0433\u0443\u0430\u0448\u044c\u044e<\/strong> – gouache<\/a>; this material is very popular in Russian school art classes.<\/p>\n

\u0430\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/strong> – watercolor paint<\/p>\n

\u0430\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c<\/strong> can also refer to a watercolor painting<\/p>\n

\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u043e<\/strong> – oil paint<\/p>\n

\u043c\u0435\u043b\u043a\u0438<\/span><\/strong> – chalk<\/p>\n

\u043f\u0435\u0439\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0436<\/strong> – landscape<\/p>\n

\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> – portrait<\/p>\n

\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044e\u0440\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442<\/strong> – still life<\/p>\n

\u0430\u0431\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0436\u0438\u0432\u043e\u043f\u0438\u0441\u044c<\/strong> – abstract painting<\/p>\n

The Practice of Art<\/h2>\n

An artist is referred to as \u0445\u0443\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong>. The Russian word \u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442<\/strong> usually refers to performers. Note the conjugation of \u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c – \u0445\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0438\u043a \u0440\u0438\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (the -\u043e\u0432\u0430- suffix disappears).<\/p>\n

\u0425\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0436\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> can show their paintings \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043a\u0435<\/strong> (at an exhibition). Some \u043c\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0438<\/strong> (museums) and \u0433\u0430\u043b\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0438<\/strong> (galleries) have \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u044d\u043a\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (permanent collections). Famous old paintings (\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong>) can sell for a lot of money \u043d\u0430 \u0430\u0443\u043a\u0446\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0435<\/strong> (at an auction). \u041a\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u044b \u0438\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/strong> (art collectors) are ready to pay a very high price.<\/p>\n
