If you took Russian — or any language, for that matter — you probably eventually arrived at a point when your teacher encouraged you to use words other than \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0438\u0439 (good) to praise things. Hopefully, you started using \u0437\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439, \u0447\u0443\u0434\u0435\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 (both mean\u00a0wonderful), \u00a0\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0445\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 (delightful), \u0432\u0435\u043b\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0435\u043f\u043d\u044b\u0439 (magnificent), \u043f\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 (great, beautiful), \u043e\u0442\u043c\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 (select, top-notch), \u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 (excellent) and many, many others. However, if you only encountered these perfectly literary adjectives, some of the newer compliments may leave you confused. Let us look at the phrases that are more colloquial and less obvious.<\/p>\n

1. \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0438\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/h2>\n

\u041f\u043e\u0437\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 looks like it is an international synonym of the Russian word \u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 (positive) — and in many senses of the word, it is. It sounds much more natural to say \u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0438\u0437\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f (positive changes) or \u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0440\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0430\u0442 (positive result) than the same phrases with \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439. However, \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0438\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 has the additional meaning of “upbeat,” “feel-good” when describing an attitude, ambiance, or personality.<\/p>\n

\u041c\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 comes from \u043c\u043e\u0434\u0430 (fashion), so it can refer to clothes quite literally — \u043c\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044e\u043c (fashionable suit), etc. It may also refer to anything en vogue, hip, or trendy. The implication often is that it is popular for now but won’t last.<\/p>\n

You would probably expect \u0432\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 (tasty) to refer to food. This is, indeed, its primary function. There is also a slang usage meaning “fresh,” “compelling,” “enjoyable.” Mind that many people will find this usage annoying. It is certainly not universally accepted.<\/p>\n

An example I saw on a web design blog is “\u0432\u043a\u0443\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0435\u043c\u044b \u0432 \u0432\u0435\u0431-\u0434\u0438\u0437\u0430\u0439\u043d\u0435” (clever web design techniques).<\/p>\n

4. \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/h2>\n

Once again, we have a word that looks like its English equivalent – creative. However, the Russian word has a much narrower range of applications. If you are talking about the creative process or creative occupations, you will probably use the word \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 — \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444\u0435\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0438, \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0440\u0435\u0448\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435. The word \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 emphasizes\u00a0the meaning of “inventive,” “resourceful,” “innovative.” You could say that \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 talks about the process, and \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 evaluates the result.<\/p>\n

Moreover, \u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 refers specifically to the newly introduced occupations in Russia, such as a copywriter, designer, or marketer. It denotes creativity in a commercial or business setting. In the recent years, “\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441” has been used, sometimes in a derogatory way, to refer to the relatively well-off, educated, young office workers who have been active in political protests<\/a> in Russia.<\/p>\n

5. \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044b\u0439<\/h2>\n

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of a good equivalent for the English word “advanced.” Sometimes it can be captured by “\u0443\u0433\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439” \u00a0(advanced English\u00a0studies\u00a0could be called \u0443\u0433\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0438\u0437\u0443\u0447\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430) or “\u0432\u044b\u0441\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0443\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043d\u044f.” Absent a succinct term,\u00a0the word “\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044b\u0439” is often used to stand in for advanced in Russian texts. The problem with\u00a0\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044b\u0439 is that it is a colloquialism, as marked by Russian dictionaries<\/a>. In other words, you could see the word “advanced” in an academic journal, but you cannot see “\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044b\u0439” in any official text.<\/p>\n

\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0443\u0442\u044b\u0439 often refers to a tech savvy person or a person marching with the times in some other respect.<\/p>\n
