However, New Year being the biggest holiday in Russia, it is also celebrated outside the home &#8212; at school and at work. Let us go over some celebrations Russian encounter throughout their lives.<\/p>\n<h2>\u0423\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/h2>\n<p>The word <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> comes from <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/strong>, so this type of celebration traditionally takes place earlier in the day. It is a celebration typical for Russian <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0441\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (literally kindergartens, actually daycare centers for children aged 3-6). Children dress up (<strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u044f\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/strong>) and prepare skits (<strong>\u0441\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/strong>), songs (<strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0438<\/strong>), or dances (<strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u044b<\/strong>). Parents often are invited to watch the show. This type of celebration is not limited to the New Year and may take place at the beginning of the school year, for public holidays, etc. Many \u0443\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438 end with a <strong>\u0447\u0430\u0435\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (tea party) when children bring sweet dishes (<strong>\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong>) to share and have tea at a long common table.<\/p>\n<h2>\u0401\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u0401\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> is the short for <strong>\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> &#8211; spruce or any Christmas tree. It also refers to the winter celebrations organized for children either by local community centers, their parents&#8217; workplace, or as a paid entertainment event by theaters and other concert venues. \u0401\u043b\u043a\u0438 usually involve skits by <strong>\u0414\u0435\u0434 \u041c\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437<\/strong> (Father Frost) and <strong>\u0421\u043d\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, group activities in a <strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> (moving, dancing, or playing a game in a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khorovod\">circle<\/a>), and, finally, gifts (<strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438<\/strong>) for the children &#8212; paid for the by the parents, of course.<\/p>\n<h2>\u041a\u043e\u043d\u0446\u0435\u0440\u0442<\/h2>\n<p>Many <strong>\u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (middle and high schools) will host concerts stages by the students. Each class (<strong>\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441<\/strong>) &#8212; as you remember, everyone in a <strong>\u043a\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0441<\/strong> takes all of their subjects at the same time &#8212; will put on its own show. These concerts tend to be mixed-genre, featuring singing, dancing, acting, poetry, and other performance arts. In my experience, they tend to be more &#8220;amateur&#8221; and DIY and less choreographed and big-production-like than their US counterparts. (People from other countries, chime in! What are school concerts like in your country?) Participation is often not competitive, and there are no auditions. Theoretically, everyone gets a chance to participate, although you may end up being the tree in the background.<\/p>\n<h2>\u0417\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u0417\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (<strong>\u0437\u0430 \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c<\/strong> &#8211; at the table) may describe any festive meal, usually with a lot of invitees, often potluck-style (<strong>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0443<\/strong>). People often have this type of celebration at work, and New Year&#8217;s is certainly one of the most important occasions. People bring food, often sweet, and alcohol, and celebrate the upcoming holidays\u00a0during the last days before the winter break.<\/p>\n<h2>\u041a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u041a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432<\/strong> is a company party, often at a rented venue. These tend to have catering and entertainment, but the word <strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432<\/strong> may have negative connotations in Russian. It evokes the image of a Western-style company that&#8217;s trying too hard, while its employees would rather be home than attend the obligatory festivities.
