This film won several awards and was nominated for an Academy Award.<br \/>\nWhile there are several themes in the film, a land dispute between a working-class man and the mayor of the city, who wants the man&#8217;s property, is what precipitates the conflict. The director admitted that he was partly inspired by the American <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marvin_Heemeyer\">Marvin Heemeyer<\/a>, who went on a bulldoze spree as a result of a zoning dispute. However, land disputes feature in several prominent Russian stories.<\/p>\n<h2>The Cherry Orchard<\/h2>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Cherry_Orchard\">The Cherry Orchard<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(<strong>\u0412\u0438\u0448\u043d\u0451\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u0430\u0434<\/strong>)\u00a0is a celebrated play by Anton Chekhov (<strong>\u0410\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0301\u043d \u0427\u0435\u0301\u0445\u043e\u0432<\/strong>) telling the story of a crumbling family. At the center of the story is a middle-aged \u00e9migr\u00e9e\u00a0returning to Russia from Paris, Lyubov Ranevskaya (<strong>\u041b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0432\u044c \u0420\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f<\/strong>). Her daughter urges her to come back as their estate is\u00a0going to be auctioned off to cover their debts (<strong>\u0434\u043e\u043b\u0433\u0438\u0301<\/strong>). The only way to save the estate is to cut down (<strong>\u0432\u044b\u0301\u0440\u0443\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong>) parts of their beautiful cherry orchard to rent out the cleared plots as summer houses (<strong>\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0447\u0438<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Ranevskaya and her family lament the loss of their abode but take little action to save it. In the end, a family friend of a lower class, the merchant Lopakhin (<strong>\u041b\u043e\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0445\u0438\u043d<\/strong>), ends up buying the estate and cutting down the orchard, which is seen by many as a betrayal of the family. This synopsis does not come close to doing the play justice, so please read it for yourself in <a href=\"http:\/\/az.lib.ru\/c\/chehow_a_p\/text_0150.shtml\">Russian<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/7986\/7986-h\/7986-h.htm\">English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Dubrovsky<\/h2>\n<p><em>Dubrovsky<\/em> (<strong>\u0414\u0443\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong>) is a lesser-known novel by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Pushkin\">Alexander Pushkin<\/a> (<strong>\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u041f\u0443\u0301\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d<\/strong>). The plot concentrates on an unlikely love story between the children of two enemies. When the wealthy nobleman Kirila Troyekurov takes over the land of his humble neighbor Andrey Dubrovsky, his son Vladimir Dubrovsky comes back from university and sets the estate on fire so there is no one to take over.<\/p>\n<p>The young Dubrovsky forms a Robin-Hood-like band that terrorizes the local noblemen. Under the guise of a French teacher, he meets Troyekurov&#8217;s daughter and falls in love with her. Troyekurov marries his daughter off to an old nobleman, and Dubrovsky flees abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Pushkin never finished\u00a0<em>Dubrovsky.<\/em> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%94%D1%83%D0%B1%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_(%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%BD)#.D0.9A.D1.80.D0.B8.D1.82.D0.B8.D0.BA.D0.B0\">Wikipedia<\/a>, this story was considered inferior to his other works and largely inspired by similar Romantic stories of the time.<\/p>\n<h2>Iron Will<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikolai_Leskov\">Nikolay Leskov<\/a> (<strong>\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0439 \u041b\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0432<\/strong>)\u00a0was\u00a0a fairly known 19th century Russian writer. His most famous books are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Enchanted_Wanderer\"><em>The Enchanted Wanderer<\/em><\/a> (<strong>\u041e\u0447\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong>)\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sealed_Angel\">The Sealed Angel<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(<strong>\u0417\u0430\u043f\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0301\u0442\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0430\u0301\u043d\u0433\u0435\u043b<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><i>Iron Will\u00a0<\/i>(<strong>\u0416\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0437\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044f<\/strong>) is a lesser-known work telling the story of a German engineer who comes to Russia and takes pride in following through his endeavors. He buys out a plot of land for his enterprise, but one part of it belongs to a local handyman, who refuses to sell it. In an attempt to push him out, Hugo Pectoralis the protagonist build a fence around the disputed plot. The handyman goes to court, and the court obligates the engineer to pay him 15 rubles per day in damages from lost income. As a result of his stubbornness, the engineer ends up losing more than he otherwise would.
