The former deputy premier was walking home from a Red Square restaurant when he was shot dead by an unidentified assailant.<\/p>\n<p>The perpetrators are unknown, with <a href=\"http:\/\/snob.ru\/selected\/entry\/88676\">theories<\/a> ranging from the usual suspect &#8212; the current government (<strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>) &#8212; to external\u00a0provocateurs (<strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b<\/strong>) to disgruntled business partners (<strong>\u0434\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0301\u0435 \u043f\u0430\u0440\u0442\u043d\u0451\u0440\u044b<\/strong>). An opposition march (<strong>\u0448\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435<\/strong>) that Nemtsov was helping organize was canceled, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-31677506\">memorial march<\/a> was held instead. I will let the readers make up their own minds about &#8220;whodunit&#8221; and invite you to look at some of the most famous political assassinations in Russia.<\/p>\n<h2>Alexander II<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_II_of_Russia#Assassination\">Emperor\u00a0Alexander II<\/a> of Russia is remembered domestically for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emancipation_reform_of_1861\">freeing the serfs<\/a> (<strong>\u043e\u0442\u043c\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0430 \u043a\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0433\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0430<\/strong>) and internationally for cracking down on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_II_of_Russia#Suppression_of_separatist_movements\">Polish independence<\/a>. Alexander II survived multiple assassination attempts before members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narodnaya_Volya\">Narodnaya Volya<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>\u041d\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0432\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044f<\/strong>) terrorist organization succeeded in carrying through a lethal bombing plot.<\/p>\n<h2>Leon Trotsky<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leon_Trotsky\">Leon Trotsky<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>\u041b\u0435\u0432 \u0422\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0446\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong>) was the once-prominent\u00a0member of the Bolshevik party and a statesman in the USSR&#8217;s first years. He was eventually ousted from power by his fellow partymen and expelled from the country. He ended up settling in Mexico, where he was assassinated on Stalin&#8217;s orders.<\/p>\n<h2>Anna Politkovskaya<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Politkovskaya\">Anna Politkovskaya<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>\u0410\u0301\u043d\u043d\u0430 \u041f\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0442\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f<\/strong>) was a journalist famous for criticizing Putin&#8217;s regime and the war in Chechnya. She gained fame for exposing government corruption in the 2000s and abuses by the military in Chechnya. Politkovskaya was found dead in the elevator of her apartment building, having been shot multiple times. The murder remains unsolved.<\/p>\n<p>This list could, unfortunately, be expanded with\u00a0many other names.
