You might have thought from the title that this post is a continuation of our pet peeves<\/a> discussion. However, I would actually like to talk about the ways annoying behavio(u)r is described in colloquial Russian. Most of these words have a different primary meaning but are used colloquially in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n

1. \u041f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/h2>\n

\u041f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> comes from \u043f\u0430\u0440 (steam) and means, broadly defined, to treat something with steam. Don’t confuse this word with \u043f\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to float, to glide). \u041f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c can be used in collocation with \u043e\u0301\u0432\u043e\u0449\u0438<\/strong> (to steam vegetables) or \u043d\u043e\u0301\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (to give your feet a steam bath). \u041f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (-\u0441\u044f<\/strong> or noun in accusative) \u0432 \u0431\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0435<\/strong> describes visiting a banya<\/em>, a\u00a0traditional Russian\u00a0steam bath.<\/p>\n

The slang meaning<\/a> of \u043f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c is to annoy someone, to tell something or ask for something in a tedious, cumbersome manner. Sometimes this also appears as “\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043c\u043e\u0437\u0433\u0438<\/strong>.” Example from the Russian National Corpus:\u00a0\u041d\u0435<\/span> \u0431\u0443\u0301\u0434\u0443<\/span> \u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f\u0301<\/span> \u043f\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/span> \u0442\u0435\u0445\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u043c\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0431\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044f\u043c\u0438<\/span> \u2015 \u043e\u043d\u0438\u0301<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0301\u0440\u043d\u043e<\/span> \u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044b<\/span> \u0443<\/span> \u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0444\u043e\u0301\u043d\u043e\u0432<\/span> \u044d\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u043a\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0430\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>(I won’t annoy you with specs\u00a0— they are more or less the same for all phones in this class).<\/span><\/p>\n

2. \u0413\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/h2>\n

\u0413\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is to load; think of the word for cargo — \u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<\/strong>. \u0413\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0437\u0447\u0438\u043a<\/strong> is a porter<\/a> — one that actually carries or loads and unloads things, not the hotel doorman. If someone is very tired, you can jokingly ask her\/him if they \u0432\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0301\u043d\u044b<\/strong> \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0436\u0430\u0301\u043b(\u0430)<\/strong> — unloaded train cars.<\/p>\n

What does any of this have to do with being annoying? \u0413\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is used colloquially to say that someone’s is testing your patience with their problems, by sharing something convoluted, or otherwise demanding attention from you.<\/p>\n

Example from the Russian Nationa Corpus:\u00a0\u0417\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0432\u044c\u0435<\/span> \u0411\u043e\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0441\u0430<\/span> \u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u0435<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044f\u0301\u043b\u043e<\/span> \u00ab\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/span>\u00bb \u0435\u0433\u043e\u0301<\/span> \u0434\u043b\u0438\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b\u043c\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043a\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (Boris Nikolayevich’s [presumably Yeltsin’s] health didn’t allow us to overload him with long texts).<\/span><\/p>\n

3. \u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/h2>\n

\u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> literally means to reach something or to obtain\u00a0something. For example, “\u0420\u0435\u0431\u0451\u043d\u043e\u043a \u043d\u0435 \u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0451\u0442 \u0434\u043e \u0432\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0445\u043d\u0435\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043a\u0438<\/strong>” means “The child can’t reach the top shelf,” and “\u041e\u043d \u0433\u0434\u0435\u0301-\u0442\u043e \u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044b \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0446\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0442 \u041c\u0430\u0434\u043e\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b<\/strong>” is “He managed to get tickets to Madonna’s concert somewhere.”<\/p>\n

The metaphor for the slang meaning is getting to someone. So, to say you’d just had it with your job you can say “\u0420\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430 \u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b\u0430<\/strong>.” It is often used to talk about people:<\/p>\n

\u042f<\/span> \u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0301<\/span> \u043c\u0435\u0301\u0441\u044f\u0446<\/span> \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0432<\/span> \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0438<\/span>, \u0438<\/span> \u0448\u0435\u0444<\/span> \u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b<\/span> \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f\u0301<\/span> \u0441\u043e<\/span> \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0438\u0301\u043c\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0434\u0438\u0301\u0440\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (I only worked for this company for a month, and my boss wouldn’t leave me alone with his knocks).<\/span><\/p>\n

4. \u0412\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c \u043c\u043e\u0437\u0433<\/h2>\n

Last but not least, I’d like to share an expression that brings a compelling image to mind. \u0412\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is, of course, to take out or carry out: \u0438\u0437 \u0434\u043e\u0301\u043c\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0301\u043d\u0435\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0432\u0441\u044e \u043c\u0435\u0301\u0431\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (all furniture was removed from the house). A homonym<\/a> of this word — also \u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong> — is to bear or take something: \u043c\u043e\u0439 \u043e\u0442\u0435\u0446 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0441\u0438\u0442 \u044d\u0301\u0442\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u0443\u0301\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (my father cannot stand this music).<\/p>\n

\u0412\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c \u043c\u043e\u0437\u0433<\/strong> literally means “to carry out someone’s brain.” The imagery here is that someone is overloading you so much with their convoluted problems or explanations (cf. \u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/strong>) that it feels like your brain is being taken out of your head.<\/p>\n

\u0412<\/span> \u044d\u0301\u0442\u043e<\/span> \u0432\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043c\u044f<\/span> \u043c\u043d\u0435<\/span> \u0443\u043f\u043e\u0301\u0440\u043d\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0430\u0301\u0447\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u044b\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u044c<\/span> \u043c\u043e\u0437\u0433<\/span>, \u043e<\/span> \u0442\u043e\u043c<\/span> \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0301\u044f<\/span> \u043e\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/span> <\/strong>\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434\u0435\u0301\u0446<\/strong> (Around that time they started beating into me the idea of how great she was). The corresponding noun phrase is \u0432\u044b\u0301\u043d\u043e\u0441 \u043c\u043e\u0301\u0437\u0433\u0430<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are, or course, numerous other ways of talking about getting someone’s goat, some of them quite vulgar.
