A visit to Russia is a short-time experience for most people. What compels the chosen few to stay in Russia past the initial three months?<\/p>\n<h2>1. Intercompany transfer<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>What:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>One category of foreigners, usually bestowed the moniker of expats (\u044d\u043a\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044b, ekspaty), staying in Russia for extended periods of time are <a href=\"http:\/\/themoscownews.com\/local\/20120924\/190273642.html\">employees of foreign or multinational companies<\/a> transferred or dispatched to Russia. Some are\u00a0top managers (\u0442\u043e\u043f-\u043c\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0436\u0435\u0440\u044b, top menedzhery). Others include journalists (\u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0441\u0442\u044b, zhurnalisty) and English teachers (\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438 \u0430\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e, prepodavateli angliyskovo).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Why:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Multinationals will often looks for employees familiar with the company&#8217;s practices and the Western way of doing business, however that may be defined in each case.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Who:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>As several articles recently pointed out, the title of &#8220;expatriates&#8221; is often reserved for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development-professionals-network\/2015\/mar\/13\/white-people-expats-immigrants-migration\">workers from developed countries<\/a>\u00a0(\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0437\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044b\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043d\u044b, razvitye strany). So, these are you Americans, Canadians, English, Dutch, Australians, French, Germans, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Pros:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Russia has ranked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-20-best-countries-for-expats-2014-10\">moderately high<\/a> on lists of top places for expats in the past<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Cons:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/afp-expats-eyeing-the-exits-after-russian-ruble-plunges-2014-12\">drop in the value of the ruble<\/a>\u00a0(\u0440\u0443\u0431\u043b\u044c), the national currency, has made Russia less attractive. Moreover, many battle isolation and lack of interaction outside of the expat bubble.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Study<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>What: <\/strong><\/span>Students from other countries come to Russia to get a college degree that will be recognized in their home country. In the days of the USSR, students <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Russian#Post_War.2C_The_Festival_Children\">from African countries<\/a> were encouraged to study in the USSR as part of the assistance offered to these countries. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalstudyguide.com\/medicine-russia.html\">Medicine<\/a>\u00a0(\u043c\u0435\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u0301\u043d\u0430, meditsina) and engineering have traditionally been one of the occupations that attracts international students.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Why:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Russian higher education has a high\u00a0reputation, depending on the subject and the university. It is\u00a0also often\u00a0more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.study-domain.com\/low-tuition-universities-in-europe\/\">affordable<\/a>\u00a0compared to other countries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Who: <\/strong><\/span>Students from Africa and the Middle East find Russian universities attractive.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Pros:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Tuition and room\/board\u00a0can be lower\u00a0than for a comparable degree in other countries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong><\/span>Due to <a title=\"University system in Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/university-system-in-russia\/\">differences in university\u00a0systems<\/a>, Russian degrees may not be fully recogniz\/sed abroad. Instruction in English\u00a0is not readily available. Finally, students might have a negative experience with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcrunch.com\/world-affairs\/in-russia-the-worst-kind-of-racism-arrives-on-campus\/c1s5477\/\">racism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Manual\u00a0Labo(u)r<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>What: <\/strong><\/span>The most numerous group of migrants in Russia are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/worldservice\/specials\/119_wag_climate\/page9.shtml\">migrant workers<\/a>\u00a0(\u0433\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0431\u0430\u0439\u0442\u0435\u0440\u044b, gastarba\u0301itery) from countries of the former Soviet Union. They work in construction, janitorial or retail jobs. The top donor countries are <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/the-buzz\/russia-the-worlds-second-largest-immigration-haven-11053\">Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Why: <\/strong><\/span>Lack of opportunity or well-paying jobs makes people from the region look toward Russia.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Who: <\/strong><\/span>People from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and other countries in the region.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Pros: <\/strong><\/span>Many adults from the former Soviet Union know Russian. Laxer entry requirements than from people from outside the region.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Cons: <\/strong><\/span>Again, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/migrant-workers-leaving-weaker-ruble-russia-2014-12\">weaker ruble<\/a> makes the country less attractive. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldpoliticsreview.com\/trend-lines\/14923\/migrant-workers-in-russia-hit-by-ruble-collapse-xenophobia\">Racism<\/a> is a problem, too.<\/p>\n<p>Have you lived in\u00a0Russia in these or any other capacities?
