We are continuing from\u00a0last week’s post<\/a> on reading famous Russian book beginnings. This time, let’s look at books likely to be known by Russian literature aficionados.<\/p>\n

Eugene Onegin (\u0415\u0432\u0433\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u041e\u043d\u0435\u0301\u0433\u0438\u043d)<\/h2>\n

Eugene Onegin<\/em> is a famous rhymed novel by Alexander Pushkin (\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u041f\u0443\u0301\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d<\/strong>). Several\u00a0English translations<\/a> have been done. While Pushkin tends to trail Tolstoy and Dostoevsky in popularity in the English-speaking world, in Russia itself he is seen as an unsurpassed\u00a0pinnacle\u00a0of Russian literature that is still largely relevant today.<\/p>\n

“\u0421\u0430\u0301\u043c\u044b\u0445 \u0447\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0438\u043b<\/strong>” is a noun phrase consisting of a noun (\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0438\u043b\u0430<\/strong> – rules) in the genitive case and an adjective referring to that noun (\u0441\u0430\u043c\u044b\u0435 \u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> – the most honest). This construction is used to describe the uncle (\u0434\u044f\u0434\u044f<\/strong>) as an honest man. A similar construction is used in\u00a0“\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0301\u043a \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0430<\/strong>” (man of his word). \u0417\u0430\u043d\u0435\u043c\u043e\u0301\u0433<\/strong> is a somewhat obsolete way of saying “fell ill” — the prefix \u0437\u0430- here indicated the start of an action. A related word \u043d\u0435\u0301\u043c\u043e\u0449\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> means feeble. \u0412\u044b\u0301\u0434\u0443\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is a colloquial words for “invent, come up with.”<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0430\u0443\u0301\u043a\u0430<\/strong> is normally science; here this words means “a lesson for others.” Note the use of \u043d\u0438<\/strong> as opposed to \u043d\u0435<\/strong> in “\u043d\u0438 \u0448\u0430\u0301\u0433\u0443 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0447\u044c<\/strong>” — \u043d\u0438 means “not even.” \u041a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> is “cunning,” “deception;” the adjective is \u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ironically, \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0436\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0301\u0439<\/strong> means the same as \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u043c\u0451\u0440\u0442\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (half dead). \u041f\u0440\u043e \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f\u0301<\/strong> is “quietly,” “in one’s head.” Another collocation with this phrase is \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u043e \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/strong> — to read to oneself (as opposed to \u0432\u0441\u043b\u0443\u0445<\/strong> – aloud).<\/p>\n

\u0425\u043e\u0437\u044f\u0301\u0439\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (masculine \u0445\u043e\u0437\u044f\u0301\u0438\u043d<\/strong>) is both owner and landlady (landlord, respectively). \u0418\u0437\u0431\u0435\u0301\u0433\u043d\u0443\u043b<\/strong> is an older variant\u00a0of \u0438\u0437\u0431\u0435\u0436\u0430\u0301\u043b<\/strong>, the perfective verb for avoid. \u041f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043b\u0443\u0301\u0433\u0430<\/strong> is a mass noun referring to the servants.<\/p>\n

\u0414\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0436\u0435\u043d<\/strong> (feminine \u0434\u043e\u043b\u0436\u043d\u0430\u0301<\/strong>) is an adjective meaning both “owe” and “have to.” \u0414\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0436\u0435\u043d<\/strong> in the sense of owe is followed by the accusative case for the debt and the dative case for the creditor. Example: \u044f \u0434\u043e\u043b\u0436\u043d\u0430\u0301 \u0435\u043c\u0443\u0301 \u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0440\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0439<\/strong> (I owe him five rubles). \u0414\u043e\u0301\u043b\u0436\u0435\u043d<\/strong> in the sense of have to is followed by the infinitive: \u043c\u044b \u0434\u043e\u043b\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0301 \u0433\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (we have to cook).
