{"id":8007,"date":"2015-06-22T07:11:59","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T07:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/?p=8007"},"modified":"2018-08-15T15:49:34","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T15:49:34","slug":"does-learning-russian-endorse-oppression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/does-learning-russian-endorse-oppression\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Learning Russian Endorse Oppression?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was once talking to a young American teacher, who told me he had started learning Russian but gave it up in protest of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2015\/03\/russia-putin-lgbt-violence-116202.html#.VYHT8PlViko\">LGTB rights violations<\/a> in Russia. It is, indeed, not hard to\u00a0be discouraged from learning Russian when Russian governments and people, past and present, commit offenses against principles one holds dear.<\/p>\n<p>However, is Russian (or any language, for that matter) solely the language of the oppressor? Does learning it mean the learner endorses the oppression? I will leave these questions here for our readers to ponder. For most causes involving Russian-speaking perpetrators, there is also a Russian-speaking champion of the oppressed. By learning Russian (or any other &#8220;implicated&#8221; language), we can hope to gain access to the cause and support the champion.<\/p>\n<h2>Foreign Intervention<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One can come up with many\u00a0examples of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, or present-day Russia meddling in the affairs of other nations. One such example is the Soviet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warsaw_Pact_invasion_of_Czechoslovakia\">invasion of Prague in 1968<\/a>. The intervention was justified by the Soviet government as fending off NATO influence, but was likely triggered by the liberal reforms in Czechoslovakia. [It was hard to imagine having a bourgeois parliamentary republic next to our border, filled with Germans from West Germany and, later, Americans.]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, not everyone in the USSR shared this outlook. On August 25, 1968, 7 people went to Red Square in Moscow to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1968_Red_Square_demonstration\">protest the invasion<\/a>. They were arrested and most of them received prison sentences or were involuntarily committed to mental institutions. One of the protesters, Larisa Bogoraz, offered <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikisource.org\/wiki\/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B5%D0%B5_%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE_%D0%9B%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%8B_%D0%91%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B7_(11_%D0%BE%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%8F%D0%B1%D1%80%D1%8F_1968)\">this motivation<\/a> for the protest in her last plea (\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0434\u043d\u0435\u0435 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043e)\u00a0in court:<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-quote\"><p>\u042f \u043e\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434 \u0432\u044b\u0431\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043c: \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0438\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043c\u043e\u043b\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c. \u0414\u043b\u044f \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043c\u043e\u043b\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00a0\u2014 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0438\u043b\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a \u043e\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044e \u0434\u0435\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0439, \u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b\u0445 \u044f \u043d\u0435 \u043e\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u044f\u044e. \u041f\u0440\u043e\u043c\u043e\u043b\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00a0\u2014 \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0438\u043b\u043e \u0434\u043b\u044f \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f \u0441\u043e\u043b\u0433\u0430\u0442\u044c. \u042f \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u044e \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437 \u0434\u0435\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0439 \u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0438\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u043c, \u043d\u043e \u0434\u043b\u044f \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f \u044d\u0442\u043e \u0431\u044b\u043b\u043e \u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e \u0432\u043e\u0437\u043c\u043e\u0436\u043d\u044b\u043c \u0440\u0435\u0448\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435\u043c.\u00a0[I was faced with a choice &#8212; to protest or stay silent. For me, staying silent meant expressing approval for actions I do not approve. Staying silent meant lying. I don&#8217;t consider my decision the only way to go, but that was the only way for me.]<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>LGBT Rights<\/h2>\n<p>Another factor contributing to Russia&#8217;s poor\u00a0human rights record\u00a0is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2014\/12\/15\/russia-impunity-anti-lgbt-violence\">cracking down on the LGBT community<\/a>. Requests to hold a pride march are routinely denied and people coming to the marches are assaulted by protesters and often arrested by the police. While homosexuality is legally shielded from persecution, Russia has recently passed a law supposed\u00a0to protect (&#8220;protect&#8221;?) minors from &#8220;LGBT\u00a0propaganda.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of the more infamous Russian politicians, member of the St. Petersburg legislature Vitaly Milonov <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-village.ru\/village\/situation\/situation\/116755-milonov\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-quote\"><p>&#8230;\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0442\u0435\u043c, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0437\u044f \u0431\u0443\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u043e\u0434\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043a\u00a0\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043c\u043d\u0430\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043c, \u0438\u00a0\u0432\u044b\u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0435\u0442 \u044d\u0442\u0443 \u0432\u043e\u043b\u043d\u0443 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0430 \u0443\u00a0\u0433\u0435\u0439-\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438\u0432\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432, \u044f\u00a0\u043c\u043e\u0433\u0443 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0442\u044c&#8221; [&#8220;I suppose this wave of protesting by gay activists was unleashed by their concern they won&#8217;t be allowed to hit on 18-year-olds anymore&#8221;].<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While Russian society as a\u00a0whole is becoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/russian\/russia\/2014\/01\/140117_russia_homophobia\">increasingly intolerant<\/a> towards LGBT people, this cause is not without its champions. Lena Klimova started a project called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deti-404.com\/\">Childen-404<\/a> (\u0414\u0435\u0442\u0438-404), which shares stories of LGBT teenagers and their struggles. She has been fined under the new law. They are helping kids, telling them, &#8220;You&#8217;re normal. You&#8217;re fine. This is not a catastrophe, disease, sin, or vice; it\u00a0simply happens.&#8221; Today any psychologist counseling an LGBT teen can be convicted for &#8220;homosexual propaganda.&#8221; And that is scary. This law forbids helping and telling the truth.]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These are just two examples of human rights abuses associated with Russia.
