Wouldn&#8217;t it be great to be able to talk about your trip in Russian or ask for specific travel advice while you&#8217;re on the road? In this post, we will concentrate on the &#8220;old town&#8221; environment (\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0440\u044b\u0439 \u0433\u043e\u0301\u0440\u043e\u0434) and all it&#8217;s got to offer.<\/p>\n<h2>The Sites<\/h2>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s name a few things you may encounter in your typical European\/colonial old town.<\/p>\n<p>\u0417\u0430\u0301\u043c\u043e\u043a &#8211; castle. Mind the word stress; \u0437\u0430\u043c\u043e\u0301\u043a is a lock. This is normally older and more rugged-looking that the later \u0434\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435\u0301\u0446 (palace).<\/p>\n<p>\u041a\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c &#8211; fortress. The adjective is \u043a\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0439, as in \u043a\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0301\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044b (fortress walls).<\/p>\n<p>\u0420\u043e\u0432 &#8211; moat. This comes from the word \u0440\u044b\u0442\u044c (to dig).<\/p>\n<p>\u0411\u0430\u0301\u0448\u043d\u044f &#8211; tower. One famous example is \u042d\u0301\u0439\u0444\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430 \u0431\u0430\u0301\u0448\u043d\u044f (Eiffel Tower). Note that the Tower of London is still called \u0422\u0430\u0301\u0443\u044d\u0440.<\/p>\n<p>\u0412\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0442\u0430 &#8211; gate. Note that this word is plural.<\/p>\n<p>\u0426\u0435\u0301\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044c &#8211; church. Specific types include \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0440 (cathedral), like \u0421\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0301\u0440 \u041f\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0301\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0411\u043e\u0433\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438 (Notre-Dame de Paris), \u0445\u0440\u0430\u043c (temple &#8211; only used for Orthodox, Buddhist, or Hindu temples, not synagogues; example &#8211; \u0425\u0440\u0430\u043c \u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301 \u0421\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f), or \u0447\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0301\u0432\u043d\u044f (chapel). Catholic churches in Eastern Europe may be called \u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0451\u043b. Other religious buildings include \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c (mosque) and \u0441\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0301\u0433\u0430 (synagogue).<\/p>\n<p>You may also see a \u043c\u043e\u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0301\u0440\u044c (monastery\/convent) or \u043a\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0434\u0431\u0438\u0449\u0435 (cemetery).<\/p>\n<h2>The People<\/h2>\n<p>Old towns were often populated by the nobility (\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0442\u044c &#8211; feminine noun, not to be confused with the verb &#8220;to know&#8221;). Some of them housed royalty like \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044c (a king) or \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0432\u0430 (a queen). Other titles you may come across are \u043a\u043d\u044f\u0437\u044c\/\u043a\u043d\u044f\u0433\u0438\u0301\u043d\u044f (prince\/ss\/ as an independent title, not the child of a king\/queen), \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0301\u043d\u0446(-\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0430) (prince\/ss\/, normally, though not always, the child of a king), \u0433\u0435\u0301\u0440\u0446\u043e\u0433(-\u0438\u0301\u043d\u044f) (duke\/dutchess), \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0444(-\u0438\u0301\u043d\u044f) (count\/ess\/), or \u0431\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0301\u043d(-\u0435\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0430) (baron\/ess\/). Wikipedia will have detailed descriptions of how these titles were used depending on the country and period.<\/p>\n<p>Other people living in old towns might have been \u0440\u0435\u043c\u0435\u0301\u0441\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438 (craftsmen), \u0432\u043e\u0301\u0438\u043d\u044b\/\u0441\u043e\u043b\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044b (warriors\/soldiers) &#8211; including \u0440\u044b\u0301\u0446\u0430\u0440\u0438 (knights), \u0434\u0443\u0445\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e (clergy), and merchants (\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0433\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0446\u044b). \u041a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c\u044f\u0301\u043d\u0435 (peasants) usually lived outside the city walls (\u0433\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0301\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043d\u044b).<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Some stories you might hear during your trip may include a \u0432\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0430 (war). \u041a\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 (fortresses) were built to withstand an \u043e\u0441\u0430\u0434\u0430 (siege). You will likely learn the story of \u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e (construction) of some of the landmarks (from the verb \u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0301\u0438\u0442\u044c &#8211; to build). Finally, you will learn when the city was \u043e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0301\u0432\u0430\u043d (founded).<\/p>\n<h2>Logistics<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, let&#8217;s learn a couple of practical phrases to help you get to all these places. You will need \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044b (entrance tickets), which you should be able to buy \u0432 \u043a\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0435 (at the ticket office). Remember to check if any \u0441\u043a\u0438\u0301\u0434\u043a\u0438 (discounts) apply! Find the \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434 (entrance) to the landmark. Perhaps you can even catch an \u044d\u043a\u0441\u043a\u0443\u0301\u0440\u0441\u0438\u044f (guided tour) or the site! If you are somewhere with a tour guide (\u0433\u0438\u0434\/\u044d\u043a\u0441\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0441\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0301\u0434), mind the \u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 (schedule). Independent travelers will want to buy a \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c (guide book) to navigate the landmarks (\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 &#8212; don&#8217;t be scared of this word!
