Last time we talked about exploring Old Town attractions<\/a> in Russian. This time, let us go to the beach (\u043d\u0430 \u043f\u043b\u044f\u0436)! This is a popular destination for people around the world, and you may hear Russian speaking on one of the beaches.<\/p>\n

Amenities<\/h2>\n

First, what are some of the things you find at a beach?<\/p>\n

\u041b\u0435\u0436\u0430\u0301\u043a (sometimes referred to as \u0448\u0435\u0437\u043b\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0433, although they are not identical) is a beach chair. This word comes from \u043b\u0435\u0436\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c (to lie down). You may want to \u0430\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\/\u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\/\u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0430\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0434\u0443 \u043b\u0435\u0436\u0430\u0301\u043a (rent a chair).<\/p>\n

You will also need to bring a \u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0446\u0435 (towel). This word is etymologically related to \u043f\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\u0435 (dress) and \u043f\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043e\u0301\u043a (handkerchief). Finally, you could bring or rent a \u0437\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0442\u0438\u043a (umbrella).<\/p>\n

Equipment<\/h2>\n

Of course, you will need a \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a (swimsuit). It can be \u0441\u043b\u0438\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 (one-piece) or \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 (two-piece). Swim trunks are called \u043f\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0432\u043a\u0438. As Jenya pointed out, don’t be shocked<\/a> if you see a few briefs or speedos at the beach — that is the normal option for many Russian men.<\/p>\n

Before you head into the sun, don’t forget your \u0441\u043e\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0449\u0438\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0440\u0435\u043c (sunblock), known colloquially as \u043a\u0440\u0435\u043c \u043e\u0442 \u0441\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0430 (the \u043b is silent). Finally, \u0441\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043d\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043e\u0447\u043a\u0438\u0301 (sunglasses) will prevent you from squinting (\u0449\u0443\u0301\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f).<\/p>\n

Those who like to snorkel (\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441 \u043c\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439) will need a \u043c\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043a\u0430 (mask) and a \u0442\u0440\u0443\u0301\u0431\u043a\u0430 (snorkel). If you are really serious about it, you will probably also use \u043b\u0430\u0301\u0441\u0442\u044b (fins).<\/p>\n

Activities<\/h2>\n

Some people want to show off their tan (\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0301\u0440) when they come back, so they like to \u0437\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c (tan). Be careful that you don’t get sunburned (\u0441\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044c), though!<\/p>\n

Others like staying active and swimming (\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c). \u041f\u043b\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c is the active swimming, while \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f (to bathe) can mean just going in the water to splash (\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f). The most skilled swimmers will also dive (\u043d\u044b\u0440\u044f\u0301\u0442\u044c). Children may build sandcastles (\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0301\u044f\u0442 \u0437\u0430\u0301\u043c\u043a\u0438 \u0438\u0437 \u043f\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0301).<\/p>\n

Sealife<\/h2>\n

The sea (\u043c\u043e\u0301\u0440\u0435) is home to many lifeforms, including fish (\u0440\u044b\u0301\u0431\u044b), seaweed (\u0432\u043e\u0301\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0438), coral reefs (\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0301\u043b\u043b\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0435 \u0440\u0438\u0301\u0444\u044b), crabs (\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0431\u044b), and shrimp (\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0442\u043a\u0438). Some of the sea inhabitants are not so pleasant to run into, as is the case with the sea urchins (\u043c\u043e\u0440\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0301\u0439 \u0451\u0436; \u043c\u043e\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0301\u0435 \u0435\u0436\u0438\u0301) or, heaven forbid, \u0430\u043a\u0443\u0301\u043b\u044b (sharks).<\/p>\n
