It will concentrate on some key vocabulary, although it is not a substitute for a beginner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/learn-russian\/\">Russian class<\/a> if you want to have a coherent conversation with your Russophone patrons. For those who cannot read Cyrillic, I recommend taking the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/language-news\/2015\/05\/18\/the-abcs-of-language-learning-transparent-language-online-alphabet-courses\/\">online alphabet course<\/a>, or you could also copy and paste the Russian words into <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/\">Google Translator<\/a> and click the speaker icon to hear the words pronounced.<\/p>\n<h2>Membership<\/h2>\n<p>In order to use a library (\u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043a\u0430) in Russia (I&#8217;m fairly sure the system is similar in other countries in the region), you need the equivalent of a library card &#8212; \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442. To start a library membership (\u0437\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430\u0301\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0301 \u043a\u0443), you need to bring some identification (\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043b\u0438\u0301\u0447\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438) &#8212; it is normally your internal Russian passport (\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442), although some libraries also accept your &#8220;foreign&#8221;\/travel passport (\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u043f\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442), student card (\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0434\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442), or military ID (\u0432\u043e\u0435\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435\u0301\u0442). A lot of libraries still have paper library cards. A library membership or the library card associated with that membership may also be called \u0430\u0431\u043e\u043d\u0435\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442.<\/p>\n<h2>Information Management<\/h2>\n<p>Once you get library membership, you will need to look for the book you want in a catalog (\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0433). Some libraries have digital catalogs, like the ones you see in libraries in the US (\u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0433). Others may only have card catalogs (\u043a\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0301\u0433), where the author&#8217;s last names are alphabetized (\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044b \u043f\u043e \u0430\u043b\u0444\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0443).<\/p>\n<p>Smaller libraries will let you take the book you need off the shelf (\u0441 \u043f\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043a\u0438) and take it to front desk (technically called \u043f\u0443\u043d\u043a\u0442 \u0432\u044b\u0301\u0434\u0430\u0447\u0438, but I&#8217;ve yet to hear anyone say that; you&#8217;d say \u0443 \u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043a\u0430\u0440\u044f). Some books will be reference only and need to be read in the reading room (\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0437\u0430\u043b). Other libraries may have you fill out a <a href=\"http:\/\/book.uraic.ru\/howto\/library\/trebovanie.htm\">request form<\/a> (\u0437\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0301\u043b\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0442\u0440\u0435\u0301\u0431\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435), and the librarian then brings you the books they have available.<\/p>\n<h2>Services<\/h2>\n<p>So far, I&#8217;ve been talking about books, but libraries also offer other services (\u0443\u0441\u043b\u0443\u0433\u0438):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u0430\u0443\u0434\u0438\u043e\u043a\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0433\u0438 (audiobooks)<br \/>\n&#8211; \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430\u043a\u0442-\u0434\u0438\u0301\u0441\u043a\u0438 (CDs)<br \/>\n&#8211; DVD (DVDs)<br \/>\n&#8211; \u0432\u0438\u0434\u0435\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0435\u0301\u0442\u044b (VHS)<br \/>\n&#8211; \u043f\u0435\u0447\u0430\u0301\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0443\u0301\u043a\u0446\u0438\u044f\/\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0438\u0437\u0434\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f (\u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d\u0430\u043b\u044b, \u0433\u0430\u0437\u0435\u0442\u044b) &#8211; periodic press<\/p>\n<p>You can take out\/borrow materials (for example, \u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043a\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0433\u0443 \u0432 \u0431\u0438\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043e\u0442\u0435\u0301\u043a\u0435), as long as you return it (\u0441\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c). As you noticed, \u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c also means to take, which is why some Russians may say &#8220;I took this book from the library&#8221; in other languages &#8212; I assure you they intend to return it.<\/p>\n<p>Subscriptions (\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043f\u0438\u0301\u0441\u043a\u0430) to educational services, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/libraries\/language-learning-online.html\">Transparent Language Online<\/a>, remain uncommon for Russian libraries &#8212; but if you work for or visit one outside Russia, you could say, &#8220;\u0423 \u043d\u0430\u0441 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0301\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u043e\u0301\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f \u043a&#8230;&#8221; (&#8220;We have free access to&#8230;&#8221;)<\/p>\n<h2>Real-World Applications<\/h2>\n<p>I would like to finish this post by sharing a few real-life dialogues as recorded in the Russian National Corpus.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2116 1, \u0436\u0435\u043d, 18] <span class=\"b-wrd-expl\">\u0417\u0434\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u0439\u0442\u0435<\/span>!
