Thanks to one of our readers, one of this pesky Russian words have been brought to my attention. What might that word be? Ironically, it is none other than the word \u201cwhat\u201d itself :-).<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">Translation of the word <span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i><b>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span> in Russian seems to puzzle foreigners because depending on the use case, it can be translated as <span style=\"font-size: large\"><i><b>what, that, random exclamation, or omitted all together<\/b><\/i><\/span>. In other words, <span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"ru-RU\"><i><b>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span> can be a pronoun, a conjunction, or a particle. So how do you determine the right translation? Let&#8217;s try to figure it out.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">1. If you are dealing with a complex sentence, <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><i>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/i><\/span><\/b> <span lang=\"en-US\">is likely to be used in the subordinate clause either as a <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>pronoun <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"en-US\">meaning <\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>what <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"en-US\">or a<\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i> conjunction <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"en-US\">meaning<\/span><b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i> that.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Here are a few examples of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: large\"><i><b>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/b><\/i><\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">being used as a pronoun. In this case <\/span>\u0447\u0442\u043e <span lang=\"en-US\">does not act as an object and can be easily omitted without sacrificing the meaning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\"><b>\u042f <\/b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>\u0442\u0430\u043a<\/b><\/span><b> \u0443\u0441\u0442<\/b><u><b>\u0430<\/b><\/u><b>\u043b\u0430, <\/b><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/b><\/span><b> \u043d\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0433<\/b><u><b>\u0443<\/b><\/u><b> \u0434<\/b><u><b>\u0430<\/b><\/u><b>\u0436\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0441<\/b><u><b>\u0443<\/b><\/u><b>\u0434\u0443 \u043f\u043e\u043c<\/b><u><b>\u044b<\/b><\/u><b>\u0442\u044c <\/b><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>or <\/b><\/span><b>\u042f \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0443\u0441\u0442<\/b><u><b>\u0430<\/b><\/u><b>\u043b\u0430, \u043d\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0433<\/b><u><b>\u0443<\/b><\/u><b> \u0434<\/b><u><b>\u0430<\/b><\/u><b>\u0436\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0441<\/b><u><b>\u0443<\/b><\/u><b>\u0434\u0443 \u043f\u043e\u043c<\/b><u><b>\u044b<\/b><\/u><b>\u0442\u044c. &#8211; <\/b><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>I am so tired (that) I can&#8217;t even wash the dishes.<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> As you can see, \u201cthat\u201d in this case can be easily omitted and the meaning of the sentence will not change. In fact, the English translation might even sound better without \u201cthat.\u201d Also, the presence of the particle <\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043a <span lang=\"en-US\">in the principal clause is a good indicator that <\/span>\u0447\u0442\u043e <span lang=\"en-US\">is a conjunction in the subordinate clause <\/span><b>(<\/b><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>&#8230;<\/b><\/span><b>\u0442\u0430\u043a&#8230;., \u0447\u0442\u043e&#8230;.).<\/b><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\"><b>\u041c\u044b \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043f<u>\u0438<\/u>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c \u0432 \u0430\u044d\u0440\u043e\u043f<u>\u043e<\/u>\u0440\u0442, (\u0447\u0442\u043e) \u0437\u0430\u0431<u>\u044b<\/u>\u043b\u0438 \u043f\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442<u>\u0430<\/u>. &#8211; <span lang=\"en-US\">We were in such a rush to get to the airport (that) we forgot our passports. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\"><b>\u041f\u043b<u>\u0430<\/u>\u0442\u044c\u0435 \u0431<u>\u044b<\/u>\u043b\u043e \u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442<u>\u043e<\/u>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0442\u0443\u0433<u>\u043e<\/u>\u0435, <span lang=\"en-US\">(<\/span>\u0447\u0442\u043e<span lang=\"en-US\">)<\/span> \u0435\u0439 \u0431<u>\u044b<\/u>\u043b\u043e \u0442\u044f\u0436\u0435\u043b<u>\u043e<\/u> \u0434\u044b\u0448<u>\u0430<\/u>\u0442\u044c. &#8211; <span lang=\"en-US\">The dress was so tight (that) it was hard for her to breathe. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\"><span lang=\"en-US\">To summarize, if you are struggling to determine whether <\/span><i><b>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/b><\/i> <span lang=\"en-US\">means <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>what <\/b><\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">or <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>that<\/b><\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, try using the sentence without it. If you cannot skip it due to the loss of meaning, then it used as a <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>pronoun what<\/b><\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. If you can omit it and the meaning does not really change, then it is used as <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i><b>conjunction that. <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"ru-RU\">3. <span lang=\"en-US\">There are a series of expressions that you might come across in everyday Russian where <\/span>\u0447\u0442\u043e <span lang=\"en-US\">has yet another meaning (surprise, bewilderment, or another emotion depending on the context). In these cases the word <\/span>\u0447\u0442\u043e <span lang=\"en-US\">is used as a particle (in most cases).
