If you grew up in the former USSR and had Russian in grade school, you will remember that\u00a0most of your class time would be spent going over the numerous rules of that language. One of the aspects that often came up in my Russian classes was what is called \u043f\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0438\u043c\u044b.\u00a0\u041f\u0430\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043c\u044b are\u00a0words that look similar, but have different meanings and are, therefore, frequently confused. Compare that to the English word paronymous<\/a>, meaning “[h]aving a similar sound, but different orthography and different meaning.”<\/p>\n

We have covered \u043f\u0430\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043c\u044b on this blog<\/a> before, and an extensive list can be found online<\/a>. Below are a few\u00a0pairs of words that are often confused even by native speakers.<\/p>\n
