Many of you have heard about the recent “Panama Papers<\/a>” (#panamapapers) scandal, where several celebrities, state officials, and business owners were revealed to have had assets in offshore companies. One of Vladimir Putin’s friends<\/a> also featured in the leak, prompting satirical posters<\/a> depicting the Russian president wearing a Panama hat\u00a0and asking “\u041a\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0301\u044f \u041f\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043c\u0430?” (“What Panama [hat]?”)<\/p>\n

This recent leak probably reminded Russians that \u041f\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043c\u0430 (Panama) is a country as well as a kind of hat, \u043f\u0430\u043d\u0430\u0301\u043c\u0430 — the latter usage is by far the prevalent one in Russian. Russian has a fairly detailed vocabulary for headwear, with several non-interchangeable names. Let’s take a look at the kinds of headwear in Russian.<\/p>\n

This word evokes potentially unfashionable headwear donned by toddlers and Soviet-era pensioners.
