We have covered some business phrases<\/a>\u00a0on this blog<\/a> before. This time, let’s concentrate on key business concepts and learn to talk about them in Russian.<\/p>\n

Property<\/h2>\n

First of all, we need to talk about property (\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>). Private property (\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0441\u043e\u0431\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>) is thought to be an important condition for entrepreneurship (\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e).<\/p>\n

Property may include\u00a0\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0435 \u0438\u043c\u0443<\/span>\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/span> (or \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>, real estate) or other assets (\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Organization<\/h2>\n

Many businesses are organized as companies (\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438<\/span>). They are often referred to as firms in Russian (\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u044b<\/span>). However, individuals also conduct business as \u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/span> (sole proprietors\/traders).<\/p>\n

Many companies will have a boss (\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/span>) and subordinates (\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/span>). Larger companies will have departments (\u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Agreements<\/h2>\n

An agreement (\u0441\u043e\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/span>) may be referred to as\u00a0\u0434\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0440<\/span> or \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0442<\/span> (both meaning “contract”). Parties to an agreement are called \u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043d\u044b<\/span> (literally, “sides”). “To sign\/close a contract” is “\u043f\u043e\u0434\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0442<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

A “deal” (as in “agreement,” not as in “bargain”) is\u00a0\u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/span>. Agreements are usually subject to terms and conditions (\u0443\u0441\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u044f<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Production<\/h2>\n

If we are talking about a traditional manufacturing company, the first step in its product life cycle will likely be \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/span>, production. If there are units being produced, we can also call it\u00a0\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/span>, release.<\/p>\n

A product is \u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440<\/span>. It may also be called \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0442<\/span>, but beware that this word also has the narrower sense of “groceries.” If we are using “product” as a mass noun for everything the company manufactures, we can also say \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The manufacturer may get an order (\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0437<\/span>) for a batch (\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u044f<\/span>) of their product. There may be a deadline (\u0441\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/span>), and the delivery (\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/span>) may need to be arranged, too.<\/p>\n

If we are selling something, we are talking about \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u0436\u0430<\/span>. The opposite is \u043f\u043e\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0430<\/span>.<\/p>\n

A seller is\u00a0\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0446<\/span>, and a buyer is\u00a0\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0443\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Pricing<\/h2>\n

The cost of making something is \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>. The price you sell it at is \u0446\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span>. If you’re selling something at cost, it’s called \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u043e \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>, although you probably want to include a mark-up\u00a0(\u043d\u0430\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/span>) in the price. The word \u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span> is also sometimes used, meaning “cost” or “value.” You may recognize it from expressions like “\u043d\u0430\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0433 \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u043e\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>” (value added tax).<\/p>\n

Supply and demand (usually “\u0441\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441 \u0438 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/span>,” literally “demand and supply”) affect the price of goods.<\/p>\n

Retailers may offer discounts (\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0438<\/span>) or have special offers (\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0446\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/span>) to attract buyers. Speaking of retailers, to buy something wholesale is \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0442\u043e\u043c<\/span>, and to buy retail is \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0443<\/span>.<\/p>\n
