There are a few idioms referring to animals in Russian. These idioms are used in colloquial speech and expressive writing to get the idea across vividly.<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0430 \u043f\u0442\u0438\u0447\u044c\u0438\u0445 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0430\u0445<\/h2>\n

\u041f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span> is, of course, “rights” (singular \u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e). \u041f\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0439 comes from \u043f\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0430, bird, and means “bird’s.” \u041d\u0430 \u043f\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u044c\u0438\u0445 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0445 means “without a lawful status or claim to something, under the table.”<\/p>\n

\u0412\u043e\u043b\u043a is a wolf, and \u0441\u0432\u0438\u043d\u044c\u044f<\/span> is a pig. Many will have political associations (“comrade”) with \u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0449, but, more generally, this word means “a peer, a fellow worker\/student, etc.” So the whole saying could be rendered as “a wolf is no match for a pig.” This expression is used to say that two people are of different caliber, backgrounds, or of rungs of society and will not be allowed to do the same things or will not get along. \u041a\u043e\u043d\u044c is a word for “horse,” along with the more common “\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u0434\u044c.” \u041a\u043e\u0440\u043c is the word for animal feed. \u041d\u0435 \u0432 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044f \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043c means the feed does not do the horse any good, or, figuratively, that a proposed or undertaken course of action failed to yield desired outcomes.<\/p>\n

As we just discussed, \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044c is a horse. \u0412\u0430\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f is to be lying around. This is a colloquial, low-register word, as in “\u043e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0430 \u0432\u0430\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443<\/span>” (clothes were thrown\/strewn on the floor). \u041a\u043e\u043d\u044c \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u0430\u043b\u044f\u043b\u0441\u044f describes a situation when no work that should have been done has been done.<\/p>\n

\u0421\u043e\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0430, as many will know, is the common word for a dog. Another, less common word, is \u043f\u0451\u0441. \u0420\u044b\u0442\u044c is to dig, so \u0437\u0430\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044c is its perfective complement, meaning “to dig in, to bury.” The whole phrase means literally “This is where the dog is buried,” and refers to the main point of the argument or the main cause of a situation, similar to “That’s what I’m talking about.”<\/p>\n
