Last time, we looked at some common Russian phrases<\/a> that have a biblical origin. There was some interest in the topic, so let’s add a few more phrases\u00a0— this time, let us concentrate on noun phrases. Just as last time, I cannot interpret these phrases theologically, but we can look at how they are used in contemporary Russian.<\/p>\n

\u0424\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u0435\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439<\/h2>\n

\u0424\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u0435\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439<\/a>\u00a0(hear it pronounced<\/a>) is the Russian equivalent of doubting Thomas<\/a>, a disciple who did not believe Jesus had been resurrected until he saw him.<\/p>\n

\u0424\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span> is a somewhat obsolete name in Russian, unlike the English Thomas. \u0412\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c is to believe, and \u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430 is faith. \u0412\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439 may be said of an observant, pious, or religious person.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e\u0437\u0451\u043b \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/a> (listen here<\/a>) is used as frequently in Russian as its counterpart “scapegoat” is in English. This expression comes from a story<\/a> of two goats, one of whom was to be sacrificed, and the other let to run off to the desert carrying sin away. In contemporary Russian, \u043a\u043e\u0437\u0435\u043b \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0449\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f refers to someone or something on which a negative situation is blamed.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e\u0437\u0451\u043b is a male goat, a female goat is \u043a\u043e\u0437\u0430<\/span>, and a baby goat (kid) is \u043a\u043e\u0437\u043b\u0451\u043d\u043e\u043a. The first two of these are also used as mild curse words for an annoying\/backstabbing man or woman, respectively. \u041e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c is to let someone go or, here, to forgive someone’s sins.<\/p>\n

\u041e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c\u044e, \u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0441\u0438\u0442\u0443\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u043d\u0435\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0433\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0439, \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a\u043e\u0437\u0451\u043b \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f. \u041a\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0442\u043a\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/a> (listen here<\/a>) is a stumbling block<\/a>. This is thought to have referred to a literal stone where non-believers and people who broke the law. In today’s Russian, this expression signifies an obstacle in achieving something.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c is a stone or rock. The adjective is \u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 as in \u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430, stone stairs. \u041f\u0440\u0435\u0442\u043a\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 is not really used in contemporary Russian; it comes from an Old Church Slavonic word<\/a> meaning “to stumble.”<\/p>\n
