Today\u2019s post also contains the reading schedule for exactly how to do this \u2013 how to read a whole novel in Russian during two months \u2013 and the schedule I\u2019ve made makes the great assumption that everyone will be able to read about 10 pages a day in the book. I know that this might not be realistic for everyone, and that\u2019s why you shouldn\u2019t feel any pressure to keep up with the schedule. You should take your time and read the book in your own pace, of course. Yelena and I will write two posts \u2013 one each \u2013 every week in which we\u2019ll sum up between two or three chapters. The first part of the novel consists of mostly shorter chapters, that\u2019s why you\u2019ll be able to finish five of those a week if you stick to this schedule! Behind the abbreviation <em>\u2018Massolit\u2019<\/em> we can easily see that Bulgakov is hinting at the Soviet Union\u2019s <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0421\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span>\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0438\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Writer\u2019s Union] \u2013 the single most powerful literary institution of the time <em>(which is sometime during the 1930\u2019s)<\/em> in the country. Berlioz is, in other words, a very powerful and influential person in literary circles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Not surprisingly we find him in the first chapter trying to give literary advice to the poet <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 <\/strong><strong>\u041f\u043e\u043d\u044b\u0440\u0435\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [Ivan Nikolaevich Ponyrev <em>(not sure where to put the stress in his last name?)<\/em>], <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u0443\u0449\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0441\u0435\u0432\u0434\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0411\u0435\u0437\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[who is writing under the pseudonym of <em>(yes, literally!)<\/em> Homeless]. Back in the 1920\u2019s and 1930\u2019s it was very popular among poets and writers in the Soviet Union to use <em>\u2018socially marked\u2019<\/em> pseudonyms, and I\u2019m sure that had the people of the time had the chance to read Bulgakov\u2019s novel then the last name <em>\u2018Homeless\u2019<\/em> would surely have pointed to how the writer himself felt about this <em>\u2018literary\u2019<\/em> practice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Berlioz and Homeless is discussing a poem that the latter wrote recently about Jesus. Berlioz is not content with the poem for he thinks that <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0418\u0438\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u0443 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0436\u0438\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Jesus turned out in his <em>(poem)<\/em> completely alive], whereas they\u2019re living in an atheistic country and the point of the poem in the first place was to deny that Jesus had existed AT ALL. At the height of this conversation a stranger arrives to whom no name is given, he is simply called\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8230;.<strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0446\u00bb<\/strong> [the foreigner]. This foreigner speaks very good Russian and starts talking with the two men of letters about Jesus and God and even gets as far as the devil, until they start to get suspicious and want to find out who he is. He presents himself first as a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [professor], then it is revealed that he\u2019s a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [consultant] and has been invited to Moscow as a <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [specialist in black magic]. Now here\u2019s when things start to get interesting! Their conversation about whether or not Jesus actually existed leads the foreigner to start talking and his monologue develops into the next chapter <strong>\u00ab<\/strong><strong>\u041f<span
