Perhaps one of the things you noticed when visiting Russia is how long the city and street names were. Maybe you never quite learned to sound out the name of the metro station closest to your hotel. “Novo… whatever,” you’d say, before taking off.\u00a0Why do Russian names have to be so bulky? The answer lies in the Russian grammar and writing system.<\/p>\n

Grammar<\/h2>\n

You might have heard in your linguistics class, if you ever took one, that Russian is a inflected language<\/a>. What that means is that Russian uses morphemes (parts of the word like suffixes or endings) to express grammatical meanings, such as tense, gender, case, etc. For example, in the sentence “\u0420\u0435\u0431\u0451\u043d\u043e\u043a \u0440\u0430\u0434 \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0440\u043a\u0443<\/strong>” (“The child is happy to receive a gift”), the ending –\u0443<\/strong> in \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0440\u043a\u0443<\/strong> conveys the following information: noun, second declension (used for masculine and neuter nouns), singular, and dative case.<\/p>\n

Moreover, suffixes are widely used to form certain parts of speech. For instance, “fall weather” is not “\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/del> \u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0434\u0430” but “\u043e\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043d\u043d\u044f\u044f \u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0301\u0434\u0430<\/strong>.” The suffix -\u043d- and the ending -\u044f\u044f transform the noun “\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong>” (“autumn, fall”) into the corresponding adjective.<\/p>\n

This brings us to Russian place names. They tend to contain all these little elements that convert the initial building blocks into the appropriate part of speech in the right gender, resulting in sometimes unwieldy designations.<\/p>\n

Take, for example, the Moscow station name \u041a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0435\u0301\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f<\/strong> (Krasnosel’skaya). What a mouthful, right? The station is named after the street bearing the same name. If we break it down, we see that this name comes from \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0301<\/strong> (“red village” or “beautiful village”). By adding the suffix -\u0441\u043a-, we make this word into an adjective, while the feminine ending -\u0430\u044f makes it agree with the feminine noun \u0443\u0301\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (street) or \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0301\u043d\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (station).<\/p>\n

Transliteration<\/h2>\n

Another reason for why Russian names look so intimidating in English letters is that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabets. As a result, it is not always clear how to read some of the transliterated names. Using the principles described above, if you read Russian, you can figure out the components of the city name \u0411\u043b\u0430\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0301\u0449\u0435\u043d\u0441\u043a<\/strong>\u2014\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0301\u044f \u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (“good tidings”).<\/p>\n

However, if you read this name in English\u2014Blagoveshchensk\u2014your eyes probably glaze over at the sight of “shch.” How in the world are you supposed to say that?! This unwieldy letter combination is how the Russian letter \u0449 (pronounced as a soft “sh”<\/a>) is transliterated according to some systems<\/a>. Similarly, \u0417\u0430\u0445\u0430\u0301\u0440\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f<\/strong> \u0443\u0301\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> turns into\u00a0Zakharyevskaya. If you don’t know that kh stands for \u0445 (breathy h sound) and “ye” is pronounced “yay” and not “eye,” you might as well give up when you see this name.<\/p>\n
