We are continuing from last week’s post<\/a> about children’s poetry. \u0420\u0435\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430 is rubber, so \u0440\u0435\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439 is the corresponding adjective, “made of rubber.” \u0417\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430 is the short for \u0417\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430, a girl’s name. \u0420\u0435\u0437\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0417\u0438\u043d\u0430 is, therefore, a rubber doll named \u0417\u0438\u043d\u0430.<\/p>\n

\u0420\u0430\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044f is a scatterbrain. \u0418\u0437\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f is to get covered with something; here with dirt — \u0432 \u0433\u0440\u044f\u0437\u0438<\/span> (nominative \u0433\u0440\u044f\u0437\u044c). \u0412\u044b<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0442\u044c is a perfective counterpart of \u043c\u044b\u0442\u044c (to wash) and means to wash once and completely. \u0413\u0440\u043e\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c literally means “threaten,” but here, used as \u043f\u043e\u0433\u0440\u043e\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0435\u043c, it means “to wag your finger at someone (telling them to behave).”<\/p>\n

The “\u043a\u0442\u043e + verb” structure in the first sentence means “some…, while others…” So, “\u043a\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0435 \u0441\u0438\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b, \u043a\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0430 \u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0443 \u0433\u043b\u044f\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b” means “some were sitting on a bench, and some were looking out at the street.”<\/p>\n

“\u0414\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043c” means “It was evening time” or “This happening in the evening.” \u0414\u0435\u043b\u043e literally means “affair, business,” but here it refers to the setting. “\u0414\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e” means “there was nothing to do.” You can also use similar constructions in the present tense: “\u041d\u0430\u043c \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c” (We have nothing to do).<\/p>\n

As we saw in the previous post, \u0443 + genitive signals possession, e.g. “\u0410 \u0443 \u043d\u0430\u0441 \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0445\u043d\u0435 \u0433\u0430\u0437” (We have gas in the kitchen — presumably, a gas stove). What’s more interesting here is the use of the conjunction “\u0430<\/a>.” In the affirmative sentences, it is used to give new\/additional information: “\u0410 \u0443 \u043d\u0430\u0441 \u0441\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c” (This could be approximated as “So we have a guest over today”) or “\u0410 \u0443 \u043d\u0430\u0441 \u0432\u043e\u0434\u043e\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434” (“And we have indoor plumbing”).<\/p>\n

It is also used to ask the switch to the other person in the conversation (“over to you” type of signal): “\u0410 \u0443 \u0432\u0430\u0441?” (“What about you?”) That’s the reason we say “\u042f \u0438\u0437 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438, \u0430 \u0432\u044b?” (“I’m from Russia, and you?”) and not “\u0438 \u0432\u044b?<\/del>”<\/p>\n

“\u0410 \u0438\u0437 \u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u043e\u043a\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u00a0\u041f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0449\u0430\u0434\u044c \u041a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0432\u0438\u0434\u043d\u0430<\/span>” means “You can see Red Square from our window.” Anything that can be seen may be described with the short adjective “\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u043d\/\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\/\u0432\u0438\u0434\u043d\u0430<\/span>\/\u0432\u0438\u0434\u043d\u044b.” To say “I can’t see,” you can say “\u041c\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e.” Similarly, “I can’t hear” is “\u041c\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u043b\u044b<\/span>\u0448\u043d\u043e.” Note the inversion of the adjective and noun in “\u041f\u043b\u043e\u0449\u0430\u0434\u044c \u041a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043d\u0430\u044f.” This is done partly to preserve the meter and partly for dramatic effect.<\/p>\n
