\u0421\u0435\u0431\u044f Overview<\/h2>\n

\u0421\u0435\u0431\u0435 is a reflexive pronoun pointing back to the\u00a0subject of the sentence. The primary meaning of \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f is “myself, yourself,” etc., depending on the subject.<\/p>\n

\u041e\u043d \u043d\u0435 \u0443\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> \u0432 \u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435 (He didn’t recognize himself in the mirror).<\/em><\/p>\n

On top of literal usage, forms of \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f appear in several set expressions, some of which we will look at below.<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span>\/\u043e\u0442 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span><\/h2>\n

Possibly the most common situation you will see “\u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f” in a Russian-language environment is opening doors. \u041d\u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f and \u043e\u0442 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f are the equivalents of “pull” and “push” signs, respectively. You are literally telling a person to move the door towards or away from\u00a0themselves. You may also see “\u043a \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span>” for “pull,” although it is less common.<\/p>\n

Coincidentally, “to work independently, to be your own boss” is “\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

In fact, “\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u043e \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f” refers to reading silently. The first interpretation of this phrase is also possible, but to make reading about yourself unambiguous, I would use “\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043e \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

That would be quite funny, but, surprisingly, “\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0437\u0430 \u0441\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0439” is closer to “take care of oneself,” “look after oneself.” This usually refers to looks, grooming, health, and physique as opposed to mental well-being.<\/p>\n
