One area where you might need Russian is dealing with the embassies and diplomatic missions of Russian-speaking countries abroad. (Remember that the Russian Federation, \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0301\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0424\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>, is not the only country where Russian is an official language<\/a>.) This post will feature some vocabulary you can use when contacting diplomatic missions that use Russian, loosely grouped around diplomacy, services for citizens abroad, and services for foreign nationals.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic Missions<\/h2>\n

A representation of one (nation) state (\u0433\u043e\u0441\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0301\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>) in another can be called \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>. This word is fairly broad and is not limited to diplomatic relations (\u0434\u0438\u043f\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0448\u0435\u0301\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong>). Any sort of representative could be called \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (m.) or \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438\u0301\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (f.) (see more on whether and how to use the feminine form here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

More specifically, an embassy is \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>. The ambassador is \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043e\u0301\u043b<\/strong>. These words are related to the verb \u0441\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong>, to send. Often, \u0434\u0438\u043f\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0301\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043c\u0438\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f<\/strong> or \u0434\u0438\u043f\u043c\u0438\u0301\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (diplomatic mission) can be used to refer to an embassy, too.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0441\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> is a consulate, and \u043a\u043e\u0301\u043d\u0441\u0443\u043b<\/strong> is a consul.<\/p>\n

Services for Citizens<\/h2>\n

What may diplomats do for the citizens (\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0436\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0435<\/strong>, singular \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0301\u043d<\/strong> (m.) or \u0433\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0434\u0430\u0301\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (f.)) of their country living abroad (\u0437\u0430<\/strong> \u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0446\u0435\u0439<\/strong>)?
