Many news outlets have published their accounts and analysis of this event. Let us read some of the coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<p>Ironically, many in Russia, especially young people, have a fuzzy understanding of the events, as demonstrated in the video below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u0437\u043d\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0435 \u043e \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0447\u0435 1991 \u0433\u043e\u0434\u0430?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dfDzq_reslg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On August 19, 1991, high-ranking officials of the Soviet Union tried to seize power from the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev (<strong>\u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0413\u043e\u0440\u0431\u0430\u0447\u0451\u0432<\/strong>) as he was vacationing in Crimea (<strong>\u041a\u0440\u044b\u043c<\/strong>). They saw his reforms as a threat to the integrity of the USSR.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Soviet republics, including Russia, had by then declared their independence from the USSR. On August 20, a new agreement was to be signed among some of the Soviet republics to define their new union that would give the constituent\u00a0countries a greater degree of independence. The center of resistance in Moscow was at the <strong>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (White House), at that time the seat of <strong>\u0412\u0435\u0440\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442 \u0420\u0421\u0424\u0421\u0420<\/strong> (Supreme Council of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic), the Russian (not all-Soviet) legislature. People gathered outside the White House and put up barricades in an effort to defend it from a potential takeover. The Russian President, Boris Yeltsin (<strong>\u0411\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0415<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0438\u043d<\/strong>, not <del>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0441<\/del>)\u00a0&#8212; remember, Russia had its own president separate from the all-USSR president &#8212; supported the anti-coup effort.<\/p>\n<p>In the early morning of August 21, armored vehicles were enforcing the curfew and three young men protesting it were killed. Unwilling to kill more civilians, the Committee pulled out the troops on August 21, and Gorbachev was allowed to return to Moscow on August 22.<\/p>\n<h2>Outcomes<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the Committee received prison sentences but were pardoned in a few years. Yeltsin banned the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (<strong>\u041a\u041f\u0421\u0421<\/strong>) and had Gorbachev&#8217;s Cabinet, many of whose members were implicated in the coup, resign.
