By now even people who don\u2019t watch TV (count me in), don\u2019t listen to the radio (me again), and donate unopened and unread sports sections of newspapers to local pet shelters (well, I compost mine, but you get the idea) have heard of \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0435\u043c\u043f\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [the World Cup].<\/p>\n

To my great surprise, I found out that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u0441\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian team] didn\u2019t qualify for the event. And all this time I thought that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [soccer] was one of the most \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043f\u0443\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [popular] sports in Russia. What gave me such an impression?<\/p>\n

It might have been jokes such as<\/p>\n

[A husband is getting comfortable in a chair in front of the TV and asks his wife: – Darling, is there anything you\u2019d like to tell me before the soccer season begins?]<\/p>\n

I guess, watching lots of games on TV doesn\u2019t amount to getting any good at playing them. Well, there\u2019s at least something in common between American football and soccer.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Russians are fabulous at transforming even the most bitter disappointments and failures into funny \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u043a\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [jokes]. You can say that Russian soccer team\u2019s performance is a joke, literally:<\/p>\n

[Soccer team \u201cSpartak\u201d traded one of its top players to Brazil. Now this strong and healthy young man works 18-hour days on a Brazilian coffee plantation.]<\/p>\n

And while traditionally some of the blame is passed on to the \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0440\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [referee] –<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0421\u0443\u0434\u044c\u044e<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [Make soap out of the referee!] is one of the mildest cries of dissatisfaction with referee\u2019s decisions – many fans agree that there is a bigger problem:<\/p>\n

Performance of the Russian soccer team\u2026]<\/p>\n

Not that there are no good soccer teams in Russia, just the opposite (or so I hear). BTW, feel free to nominate your favorite Russian soccer team in the comments or on the Facebook page. <\/em><\/p>\n

Personally, I\u2019m going to nominate \u00ab<\/strong>\u0420\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [Rotor] simply because they are from Volgograd. Besides, I loved a YouTube clip in which the commentator described the team as having \u00ab<\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <\/strong>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0431\u044d\u043a\u0433\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0443\u043d\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [good Russian soccer background], whatever that means. Plus the video showed some of the familiar sites around the city.<\/p>\n

Well, since Russian team is not playing in the World Cup 2010, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span> <\/strong>\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u0442 <\/strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [for which team will the Russians cheer]?<\/p>\n

According to a poll<\/a> by Superjob.ru, 33% of Russians don\u2019t care about soccer (!), saying that it\u2019s \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430 \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [a waste of time] and promising \u00ab\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0435 \u0441\u043c\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0435 \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [I won\u2019t even watch it].<\/p>\n

24% of those polled will watch, but won\u2019t get behind any of the teams. Some of the foreign \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [teams] that Russians will cheer for include \u00ab<\/strong>\u0410<\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u0433\u043b\u0438\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[Great Britain], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0413\u0435\u0440\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Germany], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0411\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Brazil], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0418\u0441\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Spain] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0418\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Italy].<\/p>\n

If you are a soccer fan, then you\u2019re probably already looking forward to the World Cup 2018. Well, Russia put its bid in proposing a choice of 14 venues, including Volgograd and Yekaterinburg. However, only half of Russians (again, according to Superjob.ru) support the bid.<\/p>\n

The rest either doesn\u2019t care (almost a third of respondents) or oppose the idea saying that \u00ab\u044d\u0442\u0438 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u0433\u0438 \u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0448\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [the money would be better spent building up science and manufacturing] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e <\/strong>\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0435 <\/strong>\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043e <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0434\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [more attention must be paid to the day-to-day life].<\/p>\n

But not all is doom and gloom when it comes to Russian soccer teams. Have you heard of Russian \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0443 <\/strong>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [beach soccer team]? I haven\u2019t either until just a few days ago. Turns out, it became a 2009 European League gold medalist and won 2010 Beach Soccer World Cup in Rome.<\/p>\n

So it looks like even though traditional soccer might not be \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0435\u043c <\/strong>\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0441\u0438\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [where Russia\u2019s strength lies], but \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [beach soccer] is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
