A Russian public opinion company has recently conducted a poll<\/a>\u00a0of what infractions Russians are willing to overlook and which are unforgivable. I am going to list the top three forgivable and unforgivable behaviors \u2014 check out the ones in the middle on the study’s website.<\/p>\n

What’s Forgivable<\/h2>\n

  1. \u0438\u0441\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0435\u043d\u043e\u0440\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0441\u0438\u043a\u0438\u00a0<\/b>(swearing)
    \nFifty four percent of all respondents said swearing could be condoned. This phrase literally means “using non-normative vocabulary.” Other synonyms for swear words are \u043d\u0435\u043f\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0438\u043a\u0430 (literally, “non-printable vocabulary”), \u043d\u0435\u0446\u0435\u043d\u0437\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0441\u0438\u043a\u0430, \u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>, and \u043c\u0430\u0442. To swear is \u0440\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f (\u0440\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c if obscenities are involved).     \nThis transgression seemed forgivable to 50 percent of all respondents. \u0411\u0435\u0437\u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 comes from \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442, ticket. \u041e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442 is public transport. A related word is \u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e, society. A colloquial way of referring to this behavior is \u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u0446\u0435\u043c. \u0417\u0430<\/span>\u044f\u0446 is a hare, but in this case it refers to the person not paying the fare.<\/li>\n

    \nForty one percent said this was OK. \u041f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0438\u0442\u044c means to appropriate (or sometimes “to pocket” or “to embezzle”). Another meaning of this verb is “to bestow” something, like a distinction. In that case, it is followed by the recipient in the dative and the thing being bestowed in the accusative.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \nEighty one percent said this behavior was never acceptable. \u041f\u0440\u043e\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 means “manifestation” or “expression.” We have published a\u00a0post about       verbs with the root -\u044f\u0432-<\/a>. \u041f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c is a representative. \u041f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c can mean “to represent” or “to imagine.” Finally, \u043d\u0430\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c is a “false friend” and corresponds to one’s ethnic background<\/a> as opposed to their citizenship.<\/li>\n
    2. \u0414\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\/\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0432\u0437\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (giving or taking bribes)
      \nEighty three percent of all respondents condemned bribery. You might recognize \u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430 as the word for a summer country house, also known as\u00a0      dacha<\/em><\/a>. However, this word comes from \u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c (to give), and its homonym refers to the act of giving. \u0412\u0437\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430 is a bribe; \u0432\u0437\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e is bribery. This word comes from \u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c (to take; perfective aspect). The corresponding imperfective verb uses a different root \u2014 \u0431\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c.<\/li>\n
    3. \u0423\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430\u0440\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432<\/strong> (Drug use)
      \nNinety three percent said this infraction was unforgivable. Interestingly, alcohol got “only” 78 percent for the same question. \u0423\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0431\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c means to use or to consume. A related word is \u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c, consumer. \u041d\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u043e\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438 refers to illicit drugs. What is called prescription drugs (in other words, medications) in the US is referred to as \u043b\u0435\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
