This week, it&#8217;s again making international headlines, as the Colombian government and the FARC have just formally ratified a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-37211085\" target=\"_blank\">definitive ceasefire<\/a>&#8221; and the beginning of\u00a0the end of the world&#8217;s longest ongoing armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Monday morning Colombian news magazine <i>Semana<\/i> published a story with the title <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.semana.com\/nacion\/articulo\/proceso-de-paz-cese-al-fuego-bilateral-y-definitivo-entre-gobierno-y-farc-empieza-este-lunes\/491631\" target=\"_blank\">Colombia despierta sin guerra con las FARC<\/a><\/i>. And that&#8217;s a headline for the history books. According to the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Las armas de las FARC, que sembraron miedo durante 52 a\u00f1os, quedaron en silencio a partir de la medianoche. A las 00:00 de este lunes 29 de agosto, el conflicto armado con esta guerrilla, la m\u00e1s antigua del continente, lleg\u00f3 a su fin.\u00a0Comenz\u00f3 as\u00ed el esperado cese al fuego bilateral y definitivo, decretado desde el pasado jueves por el presidente Juan Manuel Santos, y reconfirmado este domingo cuando el m\u00e1ximo jefe de las FARC dio la misma orden a sus casi 8.000 hombres armados.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While attempts at brokering a peace accord have taken place in the past in Colombia, the current\u00a0<em>cese al fuego bilateral y definitivo\u00a0<\/em>places Colombia and all of Latin America in historically uncharted and promising new territory.<\/p>\n<p><i>El conflicto armado interno de Colombia<\/i> is in 2016 the longest-running active armed conflict in the world, dating back officially to 1964 but with roots reaching back to the period of <i>La Violencia<\/i> starting in 1948. What began largely\u00a0as a national <a href=\"http:\/\/www.razonpublica.com\/index.php\/conflicto-drogas-y-paz-temas-30\/8558-sobre-la-historia-del-conflicto-agrario-en-colombia.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>conflicto agrario<\/i><\/a> and South American manifestation of <i>La Guerra Fr\u00eda<\/i> has since spent more than half a century ripping apart Colombia and spilling out across Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>This video from Colombian news magazine\u00a0<em>Semana\u00a0<\/em>gives a handy three-minute summary (in Spanish) of the conflict and its origins:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Historia del Conflicto armado en Colombia en 3 minutos\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0zmDS18SoWA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thus after more than half a century of\u00a0<em>inseguridad<\/em>,\u00a0<em>narcoterrorismo<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>impunidad<\/em>, this week&#8217;s\u00a0official <i>cese al fuego bilateral<\/i> between the Colombian government and the <i>Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia<\/i>, better known as <i>las FARC<\/i>, marks the beginning of the end of this complicated conflict, and hopefully the beginning of a bright new morning all across Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>acuerdo\u00a0<\/em>is more than just a simple ceasefire&#8211;in its final form has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.20minutos.es\/noticia\/2823224\/0\/en-que-consiste-acuerdo-colombia-farc\/puntos\/\" target=\"_blank\">6 points<\/a> for building &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/opinion\/columnistas\/paz-sostenible-y-duradera-joshua-mitrotti-columnista-el-tiempo\/16606756\" target=\"_blank\"><em>una paz sostenible y duradera<\/em><\/a>&#8221; in Colombia. They are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><strong>Reforma rural integral<\/strong> &#8212;\u00a0<\/em>investment in rural areas and closing the urban-rural opportunity gap, as well as addressing the agrarian land ownership disputes that are in many ways the original cause of the conflict.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Participaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8212; allowing the FARC and other former militant groups to form political parties and participate in government, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elpais.com.co\/elpais\/colombia\/proceso-paz\/noticias\/participacion-politica-farc-tema-espinoso-proceso-paz\" target=\"_blank\">most controversial aspect<\/a> of the agreement.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Cese al fuego y de hostilidades bilateral y definitivo y la dejaci\u00f3n de las armas<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8212; the cessation\u00a0of all armed conflict and working towards reintegrating former\u00a0<em>guerrilleros\u00a0<\/em>into civil society.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Soluci\u00f3n al problema de las drogas il\u00edcitas<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8212; changes regarding the criminal status of certain drugs, and provisions for coca farmers to earn livable incomes with\u00a0different, legal crops.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Victimas<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8212; investigation and prosecution of human rights violations that occurred during the conflict.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Mecanismos de implementaci\u00f3n y verificaci\u00f3n<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>&#8212; the formation of an implementing body, composed of representatives of the Colombian government and the FARC, to oversee the transition to peace.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>On October 2, Colombians will take to the polls to vote on a <i>plebiscito<\/i>, a nation-wide referendum approving (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/politica\/partidos-politicos\/razones-del-uribismo-para-el-no-en-el-plebiscito\/16663719\" target=\"_blank\">or rejecting<\/a>) these terms of the groundbreaking peace deal that many hope will serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/26\/colombia-farc-peace-santos\" target=\"_blank\">model for sustainable\u00a0conflict resolution in Latin America<\/a>. This has many causes, including <i>la pobreza, la desigualdad, la corrupci\u00f3n, y el narcotr\u00e1fico<\/i>, all social problems rife in most Latin\u00a0American nations.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, that means that every year countless aspiring Spanish speakers around the world write off immersion trips to countries like Colombia and its neighbors as too risky. Travel insurance comes at a premium in countries deemed active conflict zones, and most Western governments include travel warnings advising their citizens to travel with caution or not at all in Colombia and many of its neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>But while in some of Colombia&#8217;s neighbors, like Venezuela and Brazil, it looks like <i>inseguridad<\/i> and <i>inestabilidad<\/i> may remain\u00a0the norm for a few more years, those getting their houses in order and fostering environments of <i>paz<\/i> and <i>democrac\u00eda<\/i> somehow seem to escape the international news headlines.<\/p>\n<p>This year, peaceful democratic elections in <a href=\"http:\/\/cnnespanol.cnn.com\/2015\/11\/23\/eleccion-presidencial-historica-y-nueva-etapa-en-argentina\/#0\" target=\"_blank\">Argentina<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/internacional.elpais.com\/internacional\/2016\/06\/05\/america\/1465131434_969094.html\" target=\"_blank\">Peru<\/a> have safely moved both countries further away from pasts dominated by <i>golpes de estado<\/i> and <i>dictaduras militares<\/i>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latercera.com\/noticia\/nacional\/2013\/03\/680-514737-9-chile-es-el-tercer-pais-mas-democratico-de-latinoamerica-y-noruega-encabeza.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Chile<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elobservador.com.uy\/la-democracia-uruguaya-es-ejemplar-dice-un-experto-la-materia-n912618\" target=\"_blank\">Uruguay<\/a> continue to function as safe, stable democracies, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telesurtv.net\/news\/Bolivia-registra-la-mayor-reduccion-de-pobreza-en-America-Latina-20140828-0011.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bolivia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecuadorencifras.gob.ec\/13-millones-de-ecuatorianos-salieron-de-la-pobreza-en-los-ultimos-ocho-anos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ecuador<\/a> are making extreme strides against <i>la pobrezea<\/i> and <i>la desigualdad<\/i> that have caused so much of the violence and unrest in their countries. And regionally, Latin America is leading its own informal <i>proceso de paz<\/i> in <a href=\"http:\/\/internacional.elpais.com\/internacional\/2016\/05\/30\/actualidad\/1464567120_146308.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>la Guerra Contra las Drogas<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s impossible to talk about South American history without discussing\u00a0<em>la violencia<\/em>,\u00a0<em>la guerra<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>conflictos armados<\/em>, but now it&#8217;s becoming more and more necessary to talk about\u00a0<em>la paz<\/em> and\u00a0<em>el futuro<\/em>, and as the years go by, we&#8217;ll only need to learn the past tense to talk about\u00a0<em>la guerra<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos expects that, upon finalizing the transition from <em>la guerra\u00a0<\/em>to\u00a0<em>la paz<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eltiempo.com\/estilo-de-vida\/viajar\/turismo-en-colombia-y-proceso-de-paz\/16559586\" target=\"_blank\">Colombia will receive 30%\u00a0more foreign tourists annually<\/a>.
