Let&#8217;s study more expressions with hands, since the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transparent.com\/learn-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish language<\/a> has a wide variety of meanings for this part of the body. \u00a1Manos a la obra!\u00a0<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><b>Poner las manos en el fuego por alguien\u00a0<\/b><\/span><strong>(to place one&#8217;s own hand in the\u00a0fire for someone)<\/strong>: To really show that you trust\u00a0someone, you claim you would place your hands in the fire. Used by many politicians to defend cases of corruption in their parties.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez pone la mano en el fuego por &#8220;la honradez personal&#8221; de Chaves y Gri\u00f1\u00e1n. (Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez puts his hand in the fire for the &#8220;personal honesty&#8221; of Chaves and Gri\u00f1\u00e1n.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080\">Tener\u00a0buena mano para&#8230;<\/span> (to have a good hand for&#8230;)<\/strong>: When you have a special ability to do something.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0Para la cocina hay que tener buena mano. (To cook you need a good hand.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><b>Ser\u00a0un manitas<\/b><\/span><strong>\u00a0(to be handy): <\/strong>Used in Spain only, to be skillful in doing something, mostly household repairs and DIY stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0Antes, la gente era muy manitas y la mayor\u00eda sab\u00eda arreglar su coche por su cuenta. (In the past,\u00a0people were very handy and knew how to fix their\u00a0car on their\u00a0own.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #800080\">(Tener) mano dura<\/span> (to have a firm\u00a0hand): <\/b>Used to refer to the authorities, when there is no tolerance for dissent.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0El Ayuntamiento pide a la Polic\u00eda mano dura para controlar el ruido de la Plaza. (The City Council asks the police to control noise at the Square with a firm\u00a0hand<span class=\"\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #800080\">Tener mano izquierda<\/span> (to have left hand): <\/b>Official<b>\u00a0<\/b>definition: <i>Habilidad o astucia para manejarse o resolver situaciones dif\u00edciles, <\/i>or Skills or wit to handle or solve difficult situations.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0Al final todo depender\u00e1 de las personas: <a href=\"http:\/\/politica.elpais.com\/politica\/2016\/01\/13\/actualidad\/1452679625_476443.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patxi L\u00f3pez, el nuevo presidente del Congreso<\/a>, tiene raz\u00f3n al recordar que esta es la hora de pol\u00edticos con mano izquierda. (In the end, everything depends on the people: Patxi Lopez, the new president of Congress is right to remember that this is the time for politicians with left hand.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #800080\">Tirar la piedra y esconder la mano<\/span> (to throw a\u00a0stone and hide your hand):\u00a0<\/b>To do something and then pretend it&#8217;s not one&#8217;s own doing; to be hypocritical.<\/p>\n<p>Example: \u00ab\u2014Eso de <i>tirar la piedra y esconder la mano<\/i>, es muy f\u00e1cil, hija m\u00eda, y s\u00f3lo lo has hecho para darme a entender que sabes m\u00e1s de mi casa que yo misma, lo que es una pretensi\u00f3n rid\u00edcula\u00bb (Fern\u00e1n Caballero,\u00a0<i>Clemencia<\/i>. Madrid: 1852).
