This is Adir Ferreira speaking directly from Brazil, bringing you all the hottest tips to learn Spanish you can\u2019t find anywhere!<\/p>\n<p>In this podcast I\u2019m going to talk about the several uses of the word \u201ca\u201d. We tend to think that \u201ca\u201d only relates to movement \u201cto\u201d a place, this is so not true and I\u2019m going to explain why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u201d indicates movement, to, at a place. Let\u2019s see some examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>No s\u00e9 a qu\u00e9 horas lleg\u00f3 a su casa.<\/em> \u2013 I don\u2019t know what time he got to his house.<br \/>\n<em>Se lavaron las manos antes de sentarse a la mesa<\/em>. \u2013 They washed their hands before sitting at the table.<br \/>\n<em>Se desmay\u00f3 y se cay\u00f3 al piso.<\/em> \u2013 She fainted and fell to the ground.<br \/>\n<em>Ac\u00e9rcate a tus primos para sacar la foto.<\/em> \u2013 Get closer to your cousins to get your picture taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u201d is also the linking word between two verbs that are used to show one meaning, the so called locuciones. Ejemplos:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l se neg\u00f3 a hablar<\/em>. \u2013 He refused to talk.<br \/>\n<em>Entraron a hablar con el profesor hace un buen rato y todav\u00eda no han salido.<\/em> \u2013 They went in to talk to the teacher some time ago and they haven\u2019t left yet.<em><br \/>\nTu amigo dijo que ha venido a estudiar contigo.<\/em> \u2013 Your friend said he came to study with you.<br \/>\n<em>Comenz\u00f3 a llover y entramos<\/em>. \u2013 It started to rain and we went inside.<br \/>\n<em>No voy a hacerlo.<\/em> \u2013 I\u2019m not going to do it.<\/p>\n<p>It is also used in several expressions to show manner or method. Check them out:<\/p>\n<p><em>a dieta<\/em> \u2013 on a diet \u2013 estar a dieta (to be on a diet)<br \/>\n<em>a escondidas<\/em> \u2013 covertly, in a hidden way \u2013 hacer algo a escondidas (to do something covertly)<br \/>\n<em>a l\u00e1piz<\/em> \u2013 with a pencil \u2013 escribir a l\u00e1piz (to write with a pencil)<br \/>\n<em>a mano<\/em> \u2013 by hand \u2013 lavar la ropa a mano (to wash clothes by hand)<br \/>\n<em>a pie<\/em> \u2013 on foot \u2013 ir a pie (to go on foot)<br \/>\n<em>a tiempo<\/em> \u2013 in time \u2013 llegar a tiempo (to arrive on time)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u201d is also used to show the direct object of a person or something treated as a person.<\/p>\n<p><em>Vi a tu padre en la calle.<\/em> \u2013 I saw your father on the street.<br \/>\n<em>Por supuesto que conoces a mi esposa.<\/em> \u2013 Of course you know my wife.<br \/>\n<em>Encontr\u00e9 a Burbuja debajo del sof\u00e1.<\/em> \u2013 I found Burbuja under the sof\u00e1. (Burbuja is a female dog or cat.)<\/p>\n<p>It is also used to introduce an indirect object:<\/p>\n<p><em>Le doy este libro a mi hermano<\/em>. \u2013 I\u2019m giving this book to my brother.<br \/>\n<em>\u00bfLe compraste una camisa a tu marido?<\/em> \u2013 Do you buy a shirt to your husband?<br \/>\n<em>Le estoy poniendo ropa al nene.<\/em> \u2013 I\u2019m putting clothes on the baby.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bueno, es todo por hoy.
