If all you know about Medell\u00edn is what you’ve seen on a certain Netflix show, you’d be forgiven for thinking the city is an incredibly dangerous place. While that was definitely true in the not too distant past, Colombia’s “City of Eternal Spring” has undergone an amazing transformation in the past few decades. In this short post to practice your Spanish reading skills, we take a look at\u00a0Medell\u00edn, from its dark past to its bright future.<\/p>\n

Not long ago, this square would be totally empty.<\/p><\/div>\n

Hace 30 a\u00f1os, Medell\u00edn era muy peligroso. La ciudad ten\u00eda muchas problemas con las drogas y la violencia. Hab\u00edan muchos barrios a los que no se pod\u00eda ir. No hab\u00eda turistas en Medell\u00edn en ese tiempo, por lo menos no\u00a0 muchos. Tal vez 50 mil turistas al a\u00f1o en Colombia. Antes de los noventas, la ciudad no ten\u00eda un metro n\u00ed metrocable. La vida era muy deficil para las personas que viv\u00edan en las monta\u00f1as.<\/p>\n

Ahora Medell\u00edn ha cambiado mucho. Esta ciudad es mucho m\u00e1s segura que antes. Muchos barrios peligrosos se han transformado, por ejemplo la Communa 13. Ahora los ni\u00f1os no aprenden a vender las drogas, pero aprenden a pintar o hacer m\u00fasica. La ciudad hay un metro con dos l\u00edneas y varios metrocables. Muchos turistas vienen a Medell\u00edn ahora – m\u00e1s o menos 2.5\u00a0mill\u00f3n al a\u00f1o en Colombia – y algunos extranjeros se mudan aqu\u00ed. Medell\u00edn es una ciudad con un pasado oscuro, pero un futuro brillante.<\/p>\n

30 years ago, Medellin was very dangerous.\u00a0The city had many problems with drugs and violence.\u00a0There were many neighborhoods that you could not go to. There were no tourists in Medellin at that time, at least not many.\u00a0Maybe 50 thousand tourists a year in Colombia.\u00a0Before the nineties, the city did not have a metro or metrocable.\u00a0Life was very difficult for the people who lived in the mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Medellin has changed a lot.\u00a0This city is much safer than before.\u00a0Many dangerous neighborhoods have been transformed, for example Communa 13. Now children do not learn to sell drugs, but they learn to paint or make music.\u00a0The city has a metro with two lines and several metrocables.\u00a0Many tourists come to Medellin now – about 2.5 million a year in Colombia – and some foreigners move here.\u00a0Medellin is a city with a dark past, but a bright future.<\/span><\/p>\n
