For the past year, I’ve been bouncing around Latin America. You can read about my adventures in Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador in part one<\/a>, as well as Peru and Chile in part two<\/a>. In this time, I’ve been trying out the digital nomad lifestyle – working online, learning Spanish, and exploring in my free time. As I’m both a travel and language blogger, I’d like to introduce you to some of the amazing places I’ve been on my trip,\u00a0en espa\u00f1ol<\/em> of course! First up is\u00a0Santiago de Chile. With the help of my amiga who is from here, we’ve written an introduction into the Chilean capital. Put your Spanish reading skills to the test and then read the English translation.<\/p>\n

Surrounded by mountains.<\/p><\/div>\n

Santiago es la capital de Chile. Es tambi\u00e9n la ciudad m\u00e1s grande del pa\u00eds. M\u00e1s de siete millones de personas viven en ella. Fue fundada en 1541 por el conquistador espa\u00f1ol Don Pedro de Valdivia y es el centro pol\u00edtico, financiero y cultural de Chile.\u00a0<\/span>Est\u00e1 ubicada en un valle rodeado por la Cordillera de los Andes. El r\u00edo Mapocho fluye a trav\u00e9s de la ciudad. Santiago tiene un verano c\u00e1lido y seco, y un invierno fr\u00edo con baja humedad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Such a beautiful city.<\/p><\/div>\n

Santiago is the capital of Chile. It is also the largest city in the country. More than 7 million people live there. The city was founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia and it is the political, financial, and cultural center of Chile. It is located in a valley and is surrounded by the Andes mountains. The Mapocho River flows through the city. Santiago has a warm, dry summer and a cool winter with low humidity.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

La Plaza de Armas es la plaza principal de Santiago. All\u00ed puedes encontrar la hist\u00f3rica Catedral Metropolitana, la casa central de Correos de Chile, y el palacio de la Corte Suprema. Este edificio ahora est\u00e1 destinado al Museo de Historia Nacional. Ah\u00ed puedes subir hasta la cima de la torre del reloj para una mejor vista de la plaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Plaza de Armas is the main square of Santiago. Here you\u2019ll find the historic Metropolitan Cathedral, the Central Post Office Building, and the Supreme Court Palace. This building now houses the Chilean National History Museum. You can climb up to the top of the clocktower for a great view of the plaza.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

On a great bike tour with La Bicicleta verde.<\/p><\/div>\n

Una gran forma de ver Santiago y aprender sobre la ciudad es tomar un tour en bicicleta. \u201cLa Bicicleta Verde<\/a>\u201d organiza dos tours al d\u00eda. Te recomendamos tomar ambos un d\u00eda. En el tour, vas a visitar parques, probar helados t\u00edpicos deliciosos, y aprender sobre la historia de Santiago. Y por ultimo tambi\u00e9n vas a visitar el Palacio de La Moneda, la residencia presidencial.<\/span><\/p>\n

A great way to see Santiago and learn about the city is on a bike tour. La Bicicleta Verde runs tours twice a day. We recommend you do both in one day. On the tour, you\u2019ll visit local parks, try some delicious typical ice cream, and learn about the history of Santiago. And finally you\u2019ll also visit La Moneda, the presidential palace.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

It’s worth the short climb here.<\/p><\/div>\n

En Santiago hay un par de cerros que puedes subir, como el cerro Santa Luc\u00eda que est\u00e1 justo en el centro de la ciudad. La hermosa fuente de Neptuno est\u00e1 en la base del cerro. Tambi\u00e9n puedes ver el Castillo Hidalgo cuando est\u00e9s ah\u00ed. Hay una gran vista de la ciudad desde la cima. Por otro lado, el cerro San Crist\u00f3bal es un paseo ideal para hacer una caminata. En la cumbre puedes ver la estatua de la Virgen Mar\u00eda. Puedes tomar el telef\u00e9rico al bajar y disfrutar la vista en el camino.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a few hills you can climb in Santiago, like the Santa Lucia Hill that is right in the city center. The beautiful Neptune Fountain is at the bottom of the hill. You can also see the Castillo Hidalgo where you are there. There\u2019s a great view of the city from the top of the hill. On the other hand, San Cristobal Hill is a great place to go for a hike. At the top, you can see the statue of the Virgin Mary. You can take the cable car down and enjoy the view along the way.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Santiago es la casa del edificio m\u00e1s alto de Latinoam\u00e9rica. La Gran Torre Santiago tiene 300 metros de altura y es parte del Costanera Center. All\u00ed tu encontrar\u00e1s un centro comercial gigantesco. El patio de comidas tiene un balc\u00f3n con vista a la monta\u00f1a. Aseg\u00farate de probar la especialidad Chilena, el completo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Santiago is home to the tallest building in Latin America. The Grand Santiago Tower is 300 meters tall and is part of the Costanera Center. Here you\u2019ll find a massive shopping mall. The food court here has a balcony with a mountain view. Be sure to try a Chilean specialty – a completo.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Get a BIP card!<\/p><\/div>\n

Es f\u00e1cil viajar a Santiago y pasear por sus alrededores. Tambi\u00e9n cuenta con un aeropuerto internacional de buen tama\u00f1o y vuelos a muchos pa\u00edses. La ciudad tiene una extensa red de metro y buses llamada Transantiago. Si viajas a Santiago, debes comprar una tarjeta BIP, la que puedes cargar y usar para viajar en buses y metro. Los taxis tambi\u00e9n son accesibles y Uber es muy popular.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is easy to travel to Santiago and get around the city. It also has a good-sized international airport with flights to many countries. The city has an extensive metro and bus network called Transantiago. If you travel to Santiago, you should buy a BIP card, which you can use to travel on the metro and the bus. Taxis are also accessible and Uber is very popular.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Santiago es grande y moderna. Es un lugar interesante con un mont\u00f3n de cosas para ver y hacer. Como museos, parques, monumentos hist\u00f3ricos, iglesias, centros culturales y una gastronom\u00eda que mezcla sabores t\u00edpicos y del mundo. Hay muchos bares y restaurantes para elegir que te encantar\u00e1n. Es el mejor lugar para aprender la historia y cultura chilena. \u00bfQuieres viajar a Santiago?<\/span><\/p>\n

Santiago is big and modern. It’s an interesting place with a lot to see and do. With museums, parks, historical monuments, churches, cultural centers and a cuisine that mixes local flavors and those from all over the world. There are many restaurants and bars to choose from that you will love. It\u2019s the best place to learn about the history and culture of Chile.
