It is a mood (or mode), because it indicates how the speaker feels about or perceives a situation rather than when an action occurred. The subjunctive expresses unreal, hypothetical, theoretical, imaginary, uncorroborated, or unconfirmed conditions or situations. These expressions come from the speaker\u2019s doubts, emotions, wishes, wants, needs, desires, feelings, speculations, or suppositions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forming the Simple Present subjunctive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Verbs ending in \u2013ar. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hablar (to speak)<\/p>\n<p>Yo habl-e<br \/>\nT\u00fa habl-es<br \/>\n\u00c9l habl-e<br \/>\nNosotros habl-emos<br \/>\nVosotros habl-\u00e9is<br \/>\nEllos habl-en<\/p>\n<p><em>Verbs ending in \u2013er<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Comprender (to understand)<\/p>\n<p>Yo comprend-a<br \/>\nT\u00fa comprend-as<br \/>\n\u00c9l comprend-a<br \/>\nNosotros comprend-amos<br \/>\nVosotros comprend-\u00e1is<br \/>\nEllos comprend-an<\/p>\n<p><em>Verbs ending in \u2013ir<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Escribir (to write)<\/p>\n<p>Yo escrib-a<br \/>\nT\u00fa escrib-as<br \/>\n\u00c9l escrib-a<br \/>\nNosotros escrib-amos<br \/>\nVosotros escrib-\u00e1is<br \/>\nEllos escrib-an<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. The subjunctive is used in sentences that express doubt, probability. It is often used after adverbs like <strong>quiz\u00e1s<\/strong>, <strong>tal vez<\/strong> (maybe), <strong>acaso <\/strong>(in case), <strong>posiblemente <\/strong>(possibly) and <strong>probablemente <\/strong>(probably).<\/p>\n<p>Quiz\u00e1 vayamos a lo de Juan esta noche. (Maybe we\u2019ll go over to Juan\u2019s tonight.)<br \/>\nTal vez compren una casa en el campo. (Maybe they\u2019ll buy a country house.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exception<\/strong>: with <em>a lo mejor<\/em>, we must use the indicative.<\/p>\n<p>A lo mejor vienen m\u00e1s tarde. (They&#8217;ll probably come later.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Expressing wishes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a1Que disfrutes el paseo! \u2013 (May you) Enjoy your tour!<br \/>\n\u00a1Que te vaya b\u00e1rbaro ese viaje! \u2013 (May you) Have a good time on this trip!<br \/>\n\u00a1Ojal\u00e1 se recupere pronto! \u2013 I wish he gets better soon!<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Reduplicative sentences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pase lo que pase, estar\u00e9 a tu lado. \u2013 Whatever happens, I\u2019ll be by your side.<br \/>\nDiga lo que diga, no le hagas caso. \u2013 Whatever he says, don\u2019t pay any attention to him.<br \/>\nVenga quien venga, no recibir\u00e9 a nadie. \u2013 I won\u2019t see anyone, whoever it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. With impersonal expressions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is absurd that  &#8211; es absurdo que<br \/>\nIt is advisable that &#8211; conviene que<br \/>\nIt is amazing that &#8211; es asombroso que<br \/>\nIt is amusing that &#8211; es divertido que<br \/>\nIt is bad that &#8211; es malo que<br \/>\nIt is better that &#8211; es mejor que, m\u00e1 vale que<br \/>\nIt is curious that &#8211; es curioso que<br \/>\nIt is difficult that &#8211; es dif\u00edcil que<br \/>\nIt is doubtful that &#8211; es dudoso que<br \/>\nIt is easy that &#8211; es f\u00e1cil que<br \/>\nIt is enough that &#8211; es suficiente que, basta que<br \/>\nIt is essential that &#8211; es esencial que<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Expressing time condition with <em>cuando <\/em>(when), <em>tan pronto como, en el momento en que, as\u00ed que, en cuanto<\/em> (as soon as).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En cuanto recibamos la herencia, nos compraremos una casa nueva. (As soon as we get the inheritance, we&#8217;ll buy a new house.)<br \/>\nMe cambio de empleo, tan pronto como encuentre uno mejor que me pague m\u00e1s.
