But what exactly is real, traditional Mexican food? In this post we&#8217;ll take a look at some common dishes in Mexico and try to answer the question &#8220;<strong>\u00bfC\u00f3mo es la comida mexicana?<\/strong>&#8221; (What is Mexican food?).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Basic Ingredients<\/h2>\n<p>The most prominent ingredient in Mexican cuisine is definitely <em>el<\/em>\u00a0<em>ma\u00edz<\/em> (corn). That&#8217;s because just about every dish is served with <em>tortillas de<\/em>\u00a0<em>ma\u00edz\u00a0<\/em>(corn tortillas). Less common but still readily available are\u00a0<em>tortillas de harina<\/em> (flour tortillas).<\/p>\n<p>Another prominent ingredient is the chili pepper. In Mexico, you&#8217;ll find chili peppers of all varieties &#8211; fresh, dried, pickled, and made into powders and sauces. Common peppers include the <em>jalape\u00f1o<\/em>, <em>poblano<\/em>, and <em>habanero<\/em>. While there are a lot of vegetables used in Mexican cuisine, this a country that definitely loves\u00a0<em>la<\/em>\u00a0<em>carne<\/em> (meat), whether it&#8217;s <em>carne de res<\/em> (beef), <em>pollo<\/em> (chicken), or <em>cerdo<\/em> (pork). You can find tacos on just about every corner in Mexico. Common fillings for tacos include <em>carne asada (<\/em>grilled beef), <em>chorizo<\/em> (sausage), and <em>adobada<\/em> (marinated pork). It&#8217;s a sauce that&#8217;s usually made from a mix of chili pepper, fruit, nuts, spices, and chocolate. It&#8217;s a poblano chili stuffed with ground meat, topped in a walnut-based cream sauce (<em>nogada<\/em>) and pomegranate seed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Three Meals<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>El Desayuno<\/strong> (Breakfast)<\/p>\n<p>For breakfast, <em>huevos<\/em> (eggs) are very common. Some popular Mexican breakfast dishes include <em>huevos rancheros<\/em> (eggs ranch style) and <em>huevos divorciados<\/em> (divorced eggs). These are usually made with fried pieces of tortillas from the day before and then covered in beans, cheese, and either eggs or chicken. It&#8217;s basically like nachos for breakfast and it&#8217;s awesome!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>El Almuerzo<\/strong> (Lunch)<\/p>\n<p>Lunch is usually a big meal in Mexico. Many people like to go to restaurants that serve <em>comida corrida<\/em>. It&#8217;s a set meal with a soup, main course, a drink, and sometimes dessert. You can usually choose between 4-5 different dishes for the main course. It&#8217;s really filling and only costs between 50-70 pesos typically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>La Cena<\/strong> (Dinner)<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people have dinner at home with family members. What&#8217;s on the dinner table definitely depends on the region of Mexico and the people who are cooking it.
