(Two years ago, I moved to Mexico). While there was (and still is) lots of talk about building a <strong>pared<\/strong> (wall), I prefer building <strong>puentes<\/strong> (bridges). It was one of the best decisions I ever made! My friends and family are always wondering &#8220;\u00bf<strong>Por qu\u00e9 me encanta vivir en M\u00e9xico<\/strong>?&#8221; (Why do I love living in Mexico?). Ever since I broke into my first\u00a0<em>pi\u00f1ata<\/em> at a birthday party as a young\u00a0<em>ni\u00f1o<\/em>, I&#8217;ve been interested in Mexican culture.<\/p>\n<p><em>Me gustan las fiestas mexicanas, por ejemplo el <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/day-of-the-dead-dia-de-muertos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D\u00eda de Muertos<\/a> <\/em>(I like Mexican holidays, for example Day of the Dead). It&#8217;s such a colorful festival, highlighted by the\u00a0<em>ofrendas <\/em>(altars) full of flowers, incense, pictures and more. People put these in their homes and at the graves of loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, just look at this <em>desfile<\/em> (parade) from Day of the Dead in Mexico City! From <em>mariachi<\/em> in the plaza, to <em>banda<\/em> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/carnaval-de-mazatlan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnaval celebrations in Mazatl\u00e1n<\/a>, to rock bands in dive bars cranking it up to 11, there&#8217;s awesome music everywhere you go here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">La Comida<\/h2>\n<p>I know that food falls under the general umbrella of culture, but <em>la comida mexicana es muy especial<\/em> (Mexican food is very special). It definitely deserves its own heading in this blog post!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s well known that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/me-encantan-los-tacos-i-love-tacos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>me encantan los tacos<\/em><\/a> (I love tacos). Who doesn&#8217;t? Forget Taco Tuesday, I want Taco EVERY Day! I&#8217;m not kidding &#8211; <em>puedo comer tacos todos los d\u00edas<\/em> (I can eat tacos every day). <em>Tacos dorados<\/em>, <em>tacos al pastor<\/em>, <em>tacos de pescado<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0\u00a1<em>Quiero comer todos los tacos<\/em>! (I want to eat all the tacos!).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10745\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10745\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10745\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/Food.jpg\" alt=\"Todos Los Tacos (All the Tacos)\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/Food.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/07\/Food-350x250.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mmmm&#8230; tacos.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While tacos are great, there&#8217;s so much more to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/que-es-la-comida-mexicana-what-is-mexican-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexican cuisine<\/a>. I love eating a good bowl of <em>pozole<\/em>, digging in to a spicy plate of <em>aguachile<\/em>, sitting down to some\u00a0<em>enchiladas<\/em>, or just snacking on some <em>totopos y guacamole<\/em>. There&#8217;s a reason Mexican food is popular all over the world &#8211;\u00a0\u00a1<em>Es m\u00fay d\u00e9licioso<\/em>! (It&#8217;s very delicious!).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">La Gente<\/h2>\n<p><em>Los mexicanos son muy amigables<\/em> (Mexican people are very friendly). From the very first day we set foot in Mexico, we&#8217;ve been welcomed with open arms. Let me tell you a little story about our journey into the country to show you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We took the bus from Austin to Monterrey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gratefulgypsies.com\/usa-to-mexico-border-crossing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when we moved to Mexico<\/a>, and were the only <em>gringos<\/em> on board. At the border crossing, we had to get off to get our paperwork as tourists. The guards not only cracked jokes with us, but also offered us some of their dinner as they knew we had been waiting a while!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11269\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11269\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11269\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/03\/1-DSC05279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/03\/1-DSC05279.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/03\/1-DSC05279-350x233.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our amazing hosts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once we got to Monterrey, our Airbnb host picked us up and brought us to his place. The next morning, he brought over a delicious homemade breakfast that his mom whipped up for us. He then took us on a tour of his city, helped us get SIM cards, and brought us to one of his favorite restaurants for lunch. In all our years of traveling in two dozen or so countries, we&#8217;ve never experienced such hospitality!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">El estilo de vida<\/h2>\n<p>To be entirely honest, I&#8217;m not cut out for the <em>estilo de vida americano<\/em> (American lifestyle). People are way too obsessed with work, money, and material things. Sure, people care about their work and like to have nice things in Mexico, but these things don&#8217;t take priority over family, friends, and enjoying your life.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I love about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/bienvenido-a-puerto-vallarta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">living in Puerto Vallarta<\/a>\u00a0is how people always gather in the town&#8217;s plaza on the weekends. On Friday evenings, there are often\u00a0<em>payasos<\/em> (clowns) who entertain the children. The place is packed on Sundays, when locals come out to eat\u00a0<em>comida de la calle<\/em> (street food) and <em>bailar<\/em> (dance).\u00a0\u00a1<em>Es una noche muy divertida<\/em>! Forget &#8220;Netflix and chill&#8221; &#8211; I&#8217;d much rather be outside enjoying an evening with actual people.<\/p>\n<p>I also have to add that I love a good <em>siesta<\/em> (nap). I&#8217;m so much happier and more productive when I get to take a little snooze in the middle of the day! I&#8217;ll never understand why Americans brag about working overtime and not taking their vacation days&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this post has shown you a bit about why I love living in Mexico so much, and I hope you learned some useful Spanish in the process.<\/p>\n<p>To be honest,\u00a0<em>mi espa\u00f1ol no es muy bueno<\/em> (my Spanish isn&#8217;t very good). That&#8217;s yet another thing I love about living here &#8211; people are very patient and encouraging with my crappy<em> gringo<\/em> Spanish.
