Governments from several countries have raised the alarms and started contingency plans to take action. These are<em> temperatura <\/em>or temperature, <em>duraci\u00f3n <\/em>or duration and <em>regi\u00f3n <\/em> or region. The Spanish news site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/ciencia-y-salud\/ciencia\/2019\/07\/22\/5d3574acfc6c83956b8b46fd.html\">El Mundo<\/a> explains it in the following way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Se considera ola de calor un episodio de al menos <strong>tres d\u00edas consecutivos<\/strong>, en que como m\u00ednimo el\u00a0<strong>10% de las estaciones<\/strong>\u00a0consideradas registren\u00a0<strong>m\u00e1ximas por encima del percentil del 95%<\/strong>\u00a0de su serie de temperaturas m\u00e1ximas diarias de los meses de julio y agosto del periodo 1971-2000&#8243;.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the high temperatures must be higher than the normal high for at least 3 consecutive days in the same region. If the temperatures are higher than normal in the region of Andaluc\u00eda, but then move to Murcia, then this cannot be considered a heatwave.<\/p>\n<h3>Espa\u00f1a<\/h3>\n<p>Although Spain is experiencing high temperatures, it seems that this time around, it won&#8217;t be an official heatwave. Temperatures\u00a0<em>incrementaron<\/em> or increased last weekend reaching its peak or\u00a0<em>pico m\u00e1ximo<\/em> this past Monday.\u00a0<em>Tormentas secas<\/em> or dry storms are expected for this week with little rainfall, but strong thunder, lighting and possibly <em>granizo\u00a0<\/em>or hail. By the end of this week, temperatures are expected to fall an average of 10\u00b0 Celsius, 50\u00b0 Fahrenheit. During June&#8217;s heatwave, most of France experienced extreme heat; one city reached temperatures similar to Death Valley in the U.S. This month, temperatures are expected to\u00a0<em>sobrepasar<\/em> or surpass 100\u00b0 Fahrenheit bringing fears of extreme <em>sequ\u00eda <\/em>or drought which can severely damage the\u00a0<em>agricultura<\/em> of the country including its\u00a0<em>ganado<\/em> or cattle and <em>vi\u00f1edos<\/em> or\u00a0vineyards. In Paris, cars will face <em>restricciones<\/em> or restrictions in an effort to keep the <em>niveles de contaminaci\u00f3n<\/em> low. A mass of heat that has been heating up Canada is now in the U.S. with the\u00a0<em>costa Atl\u00e1ntica<\/em> facing temperatures surpassing 38\u00b0 Celsius or 100\u00b0 Fahrenheit. New York City is on high alert with\u00a0<em>Alcalde\u00a0<\/em>Bill de Blasio already declared\u00a0<em>estado de emergencia<\/em> to release funds to help the most at-risk populations. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnespanol.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/18\/mas-de-130-millones-de-personas-estan-bajo-alerta-por-ola-de-calor-en-ee-uu\/\">CNN<\/a>,\u00a0<em>&#8220;M\u00e1s de 250 millones de personas ver\u00e1n temperaturas superiores a los 32 grados cent\u00edgrados, y esto es m\u00e1s del 85% de la poblaci\u00f3n.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>Cities in the\u00a0<em>sudoeste<\/em> or south west of the country are also on alert.
