It&#8217;s one of the most popular places to travel in all of Latin America, as it&#8217;s home to the ancient city of the Incas &#8211; Machu Picchu. <strong>Este art\u00edculo es sobre mi experiencia viajando por Per\u00fa<\/strong> (This article is about my experience traveling to Peru). In Parte Uno, I&#8217;ll talk about our trip to Peru and our time spent in the capital of Lima.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Nuestro viaje a Per\u00fa<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Viajamos a Per\u00fa por casi dos meses<\/strong> (We traveled to Peru for almost two months). Our trip was split up into two parts. First up, we spent a month in Lima to give the big city life a try. It really is amazing the diversity of landscapes you can see on a trip to Peru!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Un mes en la capital<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Para empezar, pasamos un mes en Lima<\/strong> (To begin with, we spent one month in Lima). Here are some fun facts that you might not know about the Peruvian capital:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lima is home to about 1\/3 of Peru&#8217;s population.<\/li>\n<li>The city is made up of 43 different districts.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s known as <strong>La Ciudad de los Reyes<\/strong> (&#8220;The City of Kings&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>The people in Lima are called <strong>Lime\u00f1os<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Miraflores<\/h2>\n<p>Most travelers only spend a few days in Lima, but we had to catch up on some work. Such is the life of <strong>n\u00f3madas digitales<\/strong> (digital nomads).\u00a0We rented an apartment in Miraflores, which is located in the area known as <strong>La Costa Verde<\/strong> (the Green Coast). \u00a1<strong>Es un lugar muy hermoso<\/strong>! After studying in both <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/studying-spanish-in-puerto-vallarta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Puerto Vallarta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/studying-spanish-in-medellin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medell\u00edn<\/a>, it was nice to get back in the classroom if only for a short while. This scenic promenade is located on a clifftop and provides some incredible views of <strong>el oc\u00e9ano Pac\u00edfico<\/strong> (the Pacific Ocean). <strong>Hay muchos parques aqu\u00ed donde puedes hacer ejercicio o simplemente relajarte<\/strong> (There are many parks here where you can get exercise or just relax).<\/p>\n<p>Because of it&#8217;s location and the often windy conditions, Miraflores is a great place to try <strong>parapente<\/strong> (paragliding). In <strong>El Parque del Amor<\/strong> (Love Park) you can see the famous statue called <strong>El Beso<\/strong> (The Kiss) by Victor Delf\u00edn. Kennedy. Many refer to it as <strong>El Parque de los Gatos<\/strong> (the Cat Park) since it&#8217;s home to over 100 cats. You see, you don&#8217;t have to travel all the way to Cusco to see ancient ruins in Peru. <strong>Huaca Pucllana es un sitio arqueol\u00f3gico en Miraflores<\/strong> (Huaca Pucllana is an archeological site in Miraflores). This great adobe pyramid dates back to the Lima Culture, which called the area home between 200-700 AD.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">El Centro Historico<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, we got out to explore the city a bit as well. We joined a walking tour of <strong>el centro historico<\/strong> (the historic center) to do some sightseeing and learn about the city&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12727\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/07\/2-DSC04859.jpg\" aria-label=\"2 DSC04859\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12727\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12727\"  alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/07\/2-DSC04859.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/07\/2-DSC04859.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/07\/2-DSC04859-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exploring the historic center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Hay muchos lugares famosos para visitar aqu\u00ed, por ejemplo, la Catedral de Lima y el Palacio de Gobierno del Per\u00fa<\/strong> (There are many famous places to visit here, for example, the Lima Cathedral and the Government Palace of Peru).<\/p>\n<p>Another day, we headed downtown to visit <strong>La Bas\u00edlica y Convento de San Francisco<\/strong> (the Basilica and Convent of Saint Francis). In addition to admiring the beautiful church, you can also take a short tour of <strong>las catacumbas<\/strong> (the catacombs), where it&#8217;s estimated that upwards of 75,000 people were buried.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12130\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/12\/07-DSC05089.jpg\" aria-label=\"07 DSC05089\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12130\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12130\"  alt=\"Christmas in Peru\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/12\/07-DSC05089.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/12\/07-DSC05089.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/12\/07-DSC05089-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s Christmas in Peru!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We actually spent <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/christmas-in-peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>La Navidad en Per\u00fa<\/strong><\/a> (Christmas in Peru), and the historic center was a very festive place to be. It&#8217;s hard not to get a little homesick when you&#8217;re away for the holidays, but we enjoyed our time celebrating Christmas in Lima.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Barranco<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mi \u00e1rea favorita de Lima es Barranco<\/strong> (My favorite area of Lima is Barranco). It&#8217;s located just south of Miraflores and is a cool place to visit. We did another walking tour of Barranco and also visited several times on our own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Es un barrio muy bohemio y divertido<\/strong> (It&#8217;s a very bohemian and fun neighborhood). An urban legend says that if you can hold your breath and cross the entire bridge, your wish will come true!<\/p>\n<p>While I enjoyed staying in Miraflores, I think Barranco is more my scene. We&#8217;re already talking about going back to Lima and staying in Barranco for a while.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">La Comida y la Cerveza Artesenal<\/h2>\n<p>\u00a1<strong>Me encanta la comida peruana<\/strong>! (I love Peruvian food!). Whether it&#8217;s a plate of <em>ceviche<\/em>, some <em>aj\u00ed de gallina<\/em>, or <em>lomo saltado<\/em>, Peruvian cuisine is <strong>muy deliciosa<\/strong> (very delicious). I&#8217;m getting hungry just thinking about it as I write this post!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of <strong>la cervesa artesenal<\/strong> (craft beer), and there are many excellent options in Lima. With work starting at 6AM most days and then going to Spanish class in the afternoon, I decided to skip out on going out at night.
