In my travels across the region these past three years, I&#8217;ve attended some really fun <em>fiestas<\/em> and I&#8217;m excited to share some of them with you! From salsa bars to national holidays to music festivals, there&#8217;s always something exciting going on.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">M\u00e9xico<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hay muchas fiestas incre\u00edbles en M\u00e9xico<\/strong> (There are many amazing parties in Mexico). Mexicans don&#8217;t really need an excuse to party, but they&#8217;ve got plenty of them! The country has many different holidays and festivals throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important is <strong>el D\u00eda de la Independencia de M\u00e9xico\u00a0<\/strong>(Mexico&#8217;s Independence Day), which is celebrated on September 16th. <strong>Hay desfiles, conciertos, fiestas y m\u00e1s<\/strong> (There are parades, concerts, parties, and more). This is a <em>fiesta<\/em> that actually goes on for a few days!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12863\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12863\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12863\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/4-DSC09393.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/4-DSC09393.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/4-DSC09393-350x234.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a1Viva M\u00e9xico!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the night of the 15th, crowds gather in the main square to hear \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/mexicos-call-for-independence-209-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>El Grito de Dolores<\/strong><\/a>\u201d (The Cry of Dolores) \u2013 the famous call for independence given by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1810. Everyone in the crowd joins in chanting \u201c\u00a1<strong>Viva M\u00e9xico<\/strong>!\u201d (Long live Mexico!).<\/p>\n<p>The party really gets going after that, with <strong>los fuegos artificiales y la m\u00fasica de mariachi<\/strong> (fireworks and mariachi music). <strong>Por supuesto, tambi\u00e9n hay mucha cerveza y comida deliciosa<\/strong> (Of course, there&#8217;s also plenty of beer and delicious food).<\/p>\n<p>You can read all about Mexico&#8217;s Independence Day in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/el-dia-de-la-independencia-de-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a> and check out a video highlight of the celebrations in Puerto Vallarta here:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Celebrating Mexican Independence Day\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5izysoDhTXw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Guatemala<\/h2>\n<p>The small city of Antigua, Guatemala is famous for its processions during <strong>Semana Santa<\/strong> (Holy Week). <strong>Las procesiones de Semana Santa en Antigua son las m\u00e1s grandes del mundo<\/strong>\u00a0(The Holy Week processions in Antigua are the largest in the world).<\/p>\n<p>In these processions, large groups carry <strong>andas<\/strong> (altars) that depict scenes from the Bible. People work tirelessly to decorate <strong>alfombras<\/strong> (carpets) on the cobblestone streets made of flowers, sawdust, fruit, and pine needles. People travel from all over the world to be a part of this very festive occasion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12499\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12499\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12499\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/2-DSC00475.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/2-DSC00475.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/2-DSC00475-350x233.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carefully making the alfombras.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the Easter celebrations in Antigua are very well known, you may be surprised to find out that this small, conservative city in Guatemala is also home to quite the underground party scene!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hay muchos bares en Antigua, pero cierran temprano<\/strong> (There are many bars in Antigua, but they close early). Some close as early as 11 PM while even the &#8220;late night&#8221; places only stay open until 1. So where do all the party animals go once the clock strikes one?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Todos los s\u00e1bados hay una fiesta en la piscina<\/strong> (Every Saturday, there is a party in a pool). This isn&#8217;t your typical pool party, though, as there&#8217;s no water! The party, known locally as <strong>El Santo Perdido<\/strong> (The Lost Saint) is basically a rave in an empty pool. It goes all night long and attracts a mix of locals, expats, and tourists.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13700\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/IMG_3467.jpeg\" aria-label=\"IMG 3467\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13700\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13700\"  alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/ src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/IMG_3467.jpeg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/IMG_3467.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/IMG_3467-350x263.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mansion party!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Una vez al mes, tambi\u00e9n hay una fiesta en la mansi\u00f3n<\/strong> (Once a month, there&#8217;s also a mansion party). This mansion is about halfway between Antigua and Guatemala City. It&#8217;s up on a hill and offers some tremendous views of the capital in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>The mansion fiesta is an actual pool party during the day and it transforms into a bumping dance party at night. Hardcore party-goers stay to watch <strong>el amanecer<\/strong> (the sunrise) before heading home to catch some much needed z&#8217;s. It&#8217;s definitely one of the most fun <em>fiestas<\/em> I&#8217;ve ever been to!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Costa Rica<\/h2>\n<p><strong>En Costa Rica, fui a un festival de m\u00fasica internacional y a un festival local<\/strong> (In Costa Rica, I went to an international music festival and a local festival). The Envision Festival takes place in the small town of Uvita on the southwest coast. It&#8217;s gotten quite big and attracts a large crowd from all corners of the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, it&#8217;s not just a music festival. It&#8217;s also very focused on yoga, art, sustainability, and surfing. <strong>Hay muchas clases y talleres durante el d\u00eda<\/strong> (There are many classes and workshops during the day).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12395\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12395\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12395\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/14-GOPR7513.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/14-GOPR7513.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/14-GOPR7513-350x263.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunset on the beach.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Later in the day, a large crowd gathers on the beach for <strong>el atardecer<\/strong> (the sunset). It&#8217;s quite the sight to behold, with drum circles, fire twirlers, and much more.\u00a0<strong>La m\u00fasica iba hasta el amanecer cada noche<\/strong> (The music went until sunrise every night). I didn&#8217;t make it that late but I still had a blast at Envision! Specifically, we went to the town of La Fortuna. It&#8217;s a beautiful place and one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La Fortuna tiene volcanes, cascadas, un hermoso lago y mucho m\u00e1s<\/strong> (La Fortuna has volcanoes, waterfalls, a beautiful lake, and much more). While we were in town, there just so happened to be a local festival going on. One night, we went outside to find a bunch of <strong>vaqueros<\/strong> (cowboys) parading through the streets on horseback.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12382\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12382\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12382\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/01-DSC00212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/01-DSC00212.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/01-DSC00212-350x233.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cowboy party!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After asking around, we learned that there was actually a whole carnival in town for the occasion. There were rides and games for the kids as well as a packed bar with live music for the grown-ups. Best of all, there was even a rodeo! I had never been to one and had so much fun. \u00a1<strong>Los ticos son gente muy amable y divertida<\/strong>! (The Ticos are very friendly and fun people!).
