The sun also rises” (Fiesta).

Every 6th of July, at midday, and with a great bang from the traditional “Chupinazo” (firework rocket), starts one of the most well known feasts in Spain: the “Sanfermines”. The city of Pamplona dresses itself in white, with a red scarf around the neck, and prepares to enjoy nine days of continuous party.

This festivity dates back as far as the Middle Ages, being both a religious celebration and a trade fair. The large crowds of people concentrated in the city made possible to alternate religious services with music, dance, acrobats, and the later addition of the famous bull runnings.

The origin of the red scarf can be found in the religious side, being a token of San Fermin’s martyrdom, which ended with his beheading in Amiens (France) .We don’t know why the use of white clothes was adopted, but there is only one thing for sure: if you want to feel integrated in the Sanfermines atmosphere, you must wear a red scarf around your neck, red wide belt, and a white shirt, skirt or trousers, which will obviously get a little dirty when the party ends… Moreover, of course, if you want to try bull running… take any red clothes off!

Well into the 20th century, it was Ernest Hemingway who gave this celebration its unprecedented fame through his articles, but mainly because of his novel, also adapted to the big screen, “The sun also rises”. The Nobel Prize-winning author enjoyed the Sanfermines for the first time in 1929, when he was sent as a correspondent to Spain, and from that year on he returned in countless occasions up until 1959, some time before his death. He was very impressed by the atmosphere in the city, mainly with the game between man and bull, facing death. He used to stay at the hotel “La Perla”, and frequented terraces and bars such as The Txoko, the cafés Suiza or Iruña, and obviously, the bullfights. He lived and immersed himself into the Sanfermines in such a way that there were even rumours about him suffering a mishap during a bull running. All these activities were captured in his novel, and his interest for this Spanish region was so intense that even now a tourist can take the “Hemingway route”. Considering Ava Gardner played the main role in the movie, we will be able to understand the fascination that from that moment Navarre and the San Fermín celebration created among foreign celebrities, Orson Welles, Arthur Miller, Ava Gardner, Charlton Heston, or Spike Lee, as well as among Spaniards themselves, turning a small local festivity into a worldwide known celebration.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1435" title="hemingway1959ubina.g" alt="" width="300" height="199" / src="https://blogs.transparent.com/spanish/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2010/07/hemingway1959ubina.g-300x199.jpg">
