Quito es la segunda capital m\u00e1s alta del mundo<\/strong> (Let&#8217;s begin in the capital. Quito is the second-highest capital in the world). At an elevation of 2,850 m (9,350 ft) above sea level, it&#8217;s behind only <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/un-viaje-virtual-a-bolivia-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Paz, Bolivia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tambi\u00e9n es la capital m\u00e1s antigua de Sudam\u00e9rica. La ciudad tiene un centro hist\u00f3rico bien conservado<\/strong> (It&#8217;s also the oldest capital in South America. The city has a well-preserved historic center). At the heart of this area is <strong>la Plaza de la Independencia<\/strong> (Independence Square), which is colloquially known as <strong>Plaza Grande<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>En el centro de la Plaza Grande es el Monumento a la Independencia, conocido tambi\u00e9n como Monumento a los H\u00e9roes del 10 de agosto de 1809<\/strong> (In the center of the Plaza Grande is the Independence Monument, also known as the Monument to the Heroes of August 10, 1809). It&#8217;s also a museum that&#8217;s open to the public with guided tours. Be sure to sign up for one if you ever get the chance to visit Quito.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Todos los lunes, se puede ver la ceremonia del cambio de guardia frente al palacio<\/strong> (Every Monday, you can see the changing of the guard ceremony in front of the palace). It starts at 11 AM but it&#8217;s best to get there a bit early. The latter is especially fun to visit as you can actually climb up in the tower to take in the views. It&#8217;s <strong>la<\/strong> <b>Virgen de el Panecillo<\/b>, also known as the Virgin of Quito. Fun fact &#8211; at 41 m (135 ft), it&#8217;s actually taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. This cobblestone alley is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the time of the Incas. Today it&#8217;s a popular spot for shopping, dining, and nightlife.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15261\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15261\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15261\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/8.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/8.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/8-350x263.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calle la Ronda<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When in Quito, you must take a day trip to <strong>la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo<\/strong> (the Middle of the World City). This monument is located right on the equator. Did you know that&#8217;s where Ecuador gets its name from? It turns out the monument was actually built about 200 meters away from the equator, so they went and built another one. Both are easily visited on a half-day tour from the city.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15262\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15262\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15262\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/16.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/16.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/spanish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/16-350x263.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Middle of the World City<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Aqu\u00ed puedes equilibrar un huevo sobre un clavo o ver c\u00f3mo el agua que va a un desag\u00fce gira en diferentes sentidos<\/strong> (Here you can balance an egg on a nail or see how the water that goes to a drain rotates in different directions). The name is a combination of <em>telef\u00e9rico<\/em> (cable car) and Quito and it&#8217;s one of the highest aerial lifts in the world. It takes about 20 minutes to climb to 3,945 m (12,943 ft) on the east side of Volc\u00e1n Pichincha.
