I will also be highlighting and discussing the use of Spanish masculine and feminine and some rules to help you remember which endings to use.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00bfCu\u00e1l es tu profesi\u00f3n?: What is your profession? (informal)<br \/>\n\u00bfCu\u00e1l es su profesi\u00f3n? What is your profession? (formal)<br \/>\nSoy&#8230;: I am&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some job titles end with the letter \u201co\u201d if a man does them. You swap it for an \u201ca\u201d if a woman does them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>panadero\/a: baker<br \/>\ncarnicero\/a: butcher<br \/>\ncarpintero\/a: carpenter<br \/>\ncajero\/a: cashier<br \/>\ncocinero\/a: cook<br \/>\ncamarero\/a: waiter\/waitress<br \/>\nm\u00e9dico\/a: doctor<br \/>\ningeniero\/a: engineer<br \/>\nabogado\/a: lawyer<br \/>\nmec\u00e1nico\/a: mechanic<br \/>\nenfermero\/a: nurse<br \/>\nfontanero\/a: plumber<br \/>\nsecretario\/a: secretary<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some job titles end with a consonant when they are done by a man. You add an \u201ca\u201d if they are done by a woman:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>director\/+a: manager<br \/>\nprofesor\/+a: teacher<br \/>\nescritor\/+a: writer<\/p>\n<p><strong>If a job title finishes with the letter \u201ce\u201d, it is the same for a man and for a woman:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>estudiante: student<br \/>\nestudiante de espa\u00f1ol: Spanish student<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job titles finishing in \u201cista\u201d are both masculine and feminine. You cannot change them to \u201cisto\u201d for a man:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>electricista: electrician<br \/>\nrecepcionista: receptionist<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are some other job titles that don\u00b4t change gender, but they don\u00b4t follow a specific rule and are exceptions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>polic\u00eda: police officer<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfD\u00f3nde trabajas? Where do you work? (familiar)<br \/>\n\u00bfD\u00f3nde trabaja? Where do you work? (formal)<br \/>\nTrabajo en\u2026: I work in\u2026<br \/>\nUn \/una: a\/an<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most locations finishing in \u201co\u201d are masculine and most finishing in \u201ca\u201d are feminine\u201d. Locations finishing in any other letter could be either masculine or feminine so unfortunately you need to memorise each one as there are no specific rules:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oficina: office<br \/>\nColegio: school<br \/>\nEscuela: school<br \/>\nHospital: hospital<br \/>\nTaller: garage<br \/>\nBanco: bank<br \/>\nRestaurante: restaurant<\/p>\n<p>Remembering if a word is masculine or feminine is one of the keys to speaking Spanish well and really it is not as difficult as it looks.
