Remember that indirect objects always have a preposition. The direct objects are in red, the indirect ones in blue.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l escribi\u00f3 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">una carta<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">para m\u00ed<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> &#8211; He wrote<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> a letter<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">to me<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When you want to trim the sentence down and say &#8220;He wrote it to me&#8221; there are some changes.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">me <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">la <\/span><\/strong>escribi\u00f3. &#8211; He wrote <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">it<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">to me<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Notice that the indirect object pronoun comes first, then comes the direct object.<\/p>\n<p>Now see what happens to third persons, both in the singular and plural:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l le dio <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">una flor<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">a ella<\/span><\/strong>. &#8211; He gave <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>a flower<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>to her<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you were to replace <em>a ella<\/em> with an object pronoun, you&#8217;d use <em>le<\/em>, right?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">\u00c9l le la dio. <\/span>&#8211; He gave it to her.<\/p>\n<p>But for euphonic reasons, this doesn&#8217;t sound good, so in these cases we change <em>le <\/em>with <em>se <\/em>and it only happens when both are object pronouns.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">se <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>la <\/strong><\/span>dio. &#8211; He gave it to her.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">se <\/span><\/strong>&#8211; a ella (to her)<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">la <\/span><\/strong>&#8211; the flower<\/p>\n<p>Some more examples:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ella le escribi\u00f3<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> la carta <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399\">a \u00e9l\/ella<\/span><\/strong>. &#8211; Ella <strong>se <\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>la <\/strong><\/span>escribi\u00f3.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ella les escribi\u00f3 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>la carta<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>a ellos\/ellas<\/strong><\/span>. &#8211; Ella <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>se <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>la <\/strong><\/span>escribi\u00f3.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l les escribi\u00f3 <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>las cartas<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>a ellos<\/strong><\/span>. &#8211; \u00c9l <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>se <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>las <\/strong><\/span>escribi\u00f3.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c9l compr\u00f3 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">los DVDs<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333399\"><strong>para ella\/\u00e9l<\/strong><\/span>. &#8211; \u00c9l <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">se <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">los <\/span><\/strong>compr\u00f3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s practice. Change the following sentences to shorter ones by using object pronouns like the sentences above.<\/p>\n<p>1. <em>Ella le dio <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">un juguet<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">e<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\">a \u00e9l<\/span>.<\/strong><\/em> (She gave him a toy.)<\/p>\n<p>2. <em>Hemos comprado <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">este regalo<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\">para ti<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (We have bought you this gift.)<\/p>\n<p>3. <em>La maestra explic\u00f3 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">el problema<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">a las ni\u00f1as<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (The teacher explained the problem to the girls.)<\/p>\n<p>4. <em>El cartero trajo <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">la correspondencia<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">para nosotros<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (The mailmain brought us the mail.)<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0<em> El abuelo les dio <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>los caramelos<\/strong> <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">a ustedes<\/span>.<\/strong><\/em> (Grandpa gave you sweets.)<\/p>\n<p>6. <em>Su madre le compr\u00f3 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">un vestido<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\">a ella.<\/span><\/strong><\/em> (Her mother bought her a dress.)<\/p>\n<p>7. <em>Ella le prest\u00f3<strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">el abrigo<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\">a Julio<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (She loaned Julio her sweater.)<\/p>\n<p>8. <em>Le he contado <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>todo <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #333399\">a mi amiga<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (I told my friend everything.)<\/p>\n<p>9. <em>Me vendiste <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">tu coche<\/span> <span style=\"color: #333399\">a m\u00ed.<\/span><\/strong><\/em> (You sold your car to me.)<\/p>\n<p>10. <em>No le digas <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">eso <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399\">a ella<\/span><\/strong>.<\/em> (Don&#8217;t say this to her.)<\/p>\n<p>Write your anwers on the comments part!
