Here are some useful rules so you don\u2019t get them wrong anymore!<\/p>\n<p>1. The letter g, before the vowels <strong>e<\/strong> and<strong> i<\/strong>, is pronounced like the h in <em>hat<\/em> (but harder), and in this case it coincides with the pronunciation of the letter j:<\/p>\n<p>Agitar (to stir) \u2013 engendrar (to cause) \u2013 geranio (geranium) \u2013 gitano (gypsy)<\/p>\n<p>2. Before the vowels <strong>a, o, and u,<\/strong> the letter g sounds like the g in the word <em>get<\/em>:<br \/>\nAgua (water) \u2013 alg\u00fan (some, any) \u2013 gato (cat) \u2013 gorra (cap, hood)<\/p>\n<p>3. When you want the <strong>e and i <\/strong>to sound like the g in gato, add the letter u; however, the u sound is not uttered:<br \/>\nAguerrido (hardened, veteran) \u2013 conseguir (to manage, to get) \u2013 guepardo (cheetah) \u2013 guirnalda (garland)<\/p>\n<p>4. When in the combination gu+e\/i, the u sound is pronounced, the u has to carry a dieresis (\u00fc).<\/p>\n<p>Parag\u00fcero (umbrella stand) \u2013 ping\u00fcino (penguin)<\/p>\n<p>5. The letter j always has the same sound, a strongly aspired h.<br \/>\nReloj (clock) \u2013 joven (young) \u2013 enjabonar (to lather, soap)<\/p>\n<p>6.
