I hope you are all well and enjoying your Spanish studies.

Today we are going to learn the Spanish alphabet, how to spell and how to ask someone how to spell something. I hope you find the class useful.

Alfabeto: Alphabet:
A: a, B: be, C: ce, CH: che, D: de, E: e, F: efe, G: ge, H: hache, I: i, J: jota, K: ka, L: ele, LL: elle, M: eme, N: ene, Ñ: eñe, O: o, P: pe, Q: cu, R: erre, S: ese, T: te, U: u, V: uve, W: uve doble, X: equis, Y: i griega, Z: zeta.

When you want to ask someone how to spell something, for example their name, you will say:

¿Cómo se escribe/deletrea tu nombre? How do you write/spell your name? (informal)
¿Cómo se escribe/deletrea su nombre? How do you write/spell your name? How do you write/spell your name? (formal)

You can use this type of question to ask how to spell any word. For example, if you don´t understand a word or sentence someone has just said, you could ask: “¿Cómo se escribe?” and the person will spell or write it down it for you.

So, let´s practice now how to spell:

I will give you an example. If someone asks me “¿Cómo se escribe tu nombre?” I will say: “ele / a / u / erre / a”. Laura.

If you have to spell something will double letters, you just say the letter and after “doble”. For example “Perro” which means dog, is spelt “pe / e / erre doble / o”.

I am now going to ask you to spell a few words and I would like you to practice with me:

1. ¿Cómo se escribe “estudiante”?

2. ¿Cómo se escribe “español”?

3. ¿Cómo se deletrea “Washington”?

4. ¿Cómo se deletrea “Argentina”?

This is all for today about the alphabet and spelling. I recommend that you practice spelling your first name, surname, address and other words you already know. Spelling is very useful at beginner level when someone doesn´t understand a word you are saying or when you don´t understand what they are saying.

I hope you have a very nice day and look forward to seeing you next time in class.

¡¡Hasta pronto!!

¡¡Hola!!
